Mary Magdalene<\/p>\n

As soon as night descends, we meet.
\nRemorse my memories releases.
\nThe demons of the past compete,
\nAnd draw and tear my heart to pieces,
\nSin, vice and madness and deceit,
\nWhen I was slave of men’s caprices
\nAnd when my dwelling was the street.<\/p>\n

The deathly silence is not far;
\nA few more moments only matter,
\nWhich the Inevitable bar.
\nBut at the edge, before they scatter,
\nIn front of Thee my life I shatter,
\nAs though an alabaster jar.<\/p>\n

O what might not have been my fate
\nBy now, my Teacher and my Saviour,
\nDid not eternity await
\nMe at the table, as a late
\nNew victim of my past behaviour!<\/p>\n

But what can sin now mean to me,
\nAnd death, and hell, and sulphur burning,
\nWhen, like a graft onto a tree,
\nI have-for everyone to see-
\nGrown into being part of Thee
\nIn my immeasurable yearning?<\/p>\n

When pressed against my knees I place
\nThy precious feet, and weep, despairing,
\nPerhaps I’m learning to embrace
\nThe cross’s rough four-sided face;
\nAnd, fainting, all my being sways
\nTowards Thee, Thy burial preparing.<\/p>\n
