Gipsy Vans<\/p>\n

Unless you come of the Gipsy stock
\nThat steals by night and day,
\nLock your heart with a double lock
\nAnd throw the key away.
\nBury it under the blackest stone
\nBeneath your father’s hearth,
\nAnd keep your eyes on your lawful own
\nAnd your feet to the proper path.
\nThen you can stand at your door and mock
\nWhen the Gipsy vans come through…
\nFor it isn’t right that the Gorgio stock
\nShould live as the Romany do.<\/p>\n

Unless you come of the gipsy blood
\nThat takes and never spares,
\nBide content with your given good
\nAnd follow your own affairs.
\nPlough and harrow and roll your land,
\nAnd sow what ought to be sowed;
\nBut never let loose your heart from your hand,
\nNor flitter it down the road!
\nThen you can thrive on your boughten food
\nAs the gipsy vans come through…
\nFor it isn’t nature the Gorgio blood
\nShould love as the Romany do.<\/p>\n

Unless you carry the Gipsy eyes
\nThat see but seldom weep,
\nKeep your head from the naked skies
\nOr the stars’ll trouble your sleep.
\nWatch your moon through your window-pane
\nAnd take what weather she brews;
\nBut don’t run out in the midnight rain
\nNor home in the morning dews.
\nThen you can huddle and shut your eyes
\nAs the gipsy vans come through…
\nFor it isn’t fitting the Gorgio ryes
\nShould walk as the Romany do.<\/p>\n

Unless you come of the ipsy race
\nThat counts all time the same,
\nBe you careful of Time and Place
\nAnd Judgment and Good Name:
\nLose your life for to live your life
\nThe way that you ought to do;
\nAnd when you are finished, your God and your wife
\nAnd the Gipsies’ll laugh at you!
\nThen you can rot in your burying place
\nAs the gipsy vans come through…
\nFor it isn’t reason the Gorgio race
\nShould die as the Romany do.<\/p>\n
