Independence Day!<\/p>\n

The land of forever snow is only mine. It is not like any other country.
My Finland is blue and white. My Finland means the deep woods where live the fairies, the legends. It is the place where the heaven and the earth meet.
My Finland is the incomparable Kalevala. My Finland is sauna.
I felt the sanctity of the sauna, its silence, the silent moan of the water dying on the hot stones, giving birth to sauna’s spirit, \u201cl\u00f6yly\u201d , which cannot be translated in any other language.
Then I hid in Finnish language like in my mother’s arms.
I don’t know when I fell in love with it. Maybe at those nights when I was crying helpless, because I could not understand it.
This Finnish language is so itself, one of a kind, silent, lonely, independent, like me.
It resembles no other language. It did not want to borrow anything from any other language. And that little bit which it has borrowed, it has merged with itself so that it is not recognized as loan.
It has enriched its vocabulary by creating new words from the old ones combined together. In any other language we use complete words to construct a sentence, only my beloved, stubborn language expresses itself by using suffixes and post-positions.
I think that only in Finnish language “I love you” sounds as deep, strong, mysterious as the real love is.
Today, December the 6th is the Independence Day of Finland.

Ikuisen lumen maa on vain minun. Se ei muistuta mit\u00e4\u00e4n muuta maata. Minun Suomeni on sininen ja valkoinen. Minun Suomeni on syvi\u00e4 metsi\u00e4, joissa asuu haltijoita, el\u00e4\u00e4 taruja. Se on paikka, jossa taivas ja maa kohtaavat. Suomeni on Kalevala, vertaansa vailla. Suomeni on sauna. Olen tuntenut saunan pyhyyden, hiljaisuuden, veden hiljaisen valituksen sen kuollessa kuumille kiville, jotka synnytt\u00e4v\u00e4t saunan hengen, l\u00f6yly, jota ei voi k\u00e4\u00e4nt\u00e4\u00e4 muille kielille.
Sitten piilouduin suomen kieleen kuin \u00e4idin k\u00e4sivarsille. En tied\u00e4 milloin rakastuin siihen. Ehk\u00e4 niin\u00e4 \u00f6in\u00e4, joina itkin avuttomana, kun en voinut ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4\u00e4 sit\u00e4. Se suomen kieli on niin oma itsens\u00e4, ainutlaatuinen, hiljainen, yksin\u00e4inen, riippumaton, aivan niin kuin min\u00e4kin. Se ei muistuta mit\u00e4\u00e4n muuta kielt\u00e4. Se ei ole halunnut lainata mit\u00e4\u00e4n mist\u00e4\u00e4n muusta kielest\u00e4. Ja sen v\u00e4h\u00e4n, mink\u00e4 se on lainannut, se on sulauttanut itseens\u00e4 niin, ettei niit\u00e4 tunnista lainoiksi. Se on rikastuttanut sanavarastoaan luomalla uusia sanoja yhdistelem\u00e4ll\u00e4 vanhoja. Miss\u00e4 tahansa kieless\u00e4 k\u00e4ytet\u00e4\u00e4n kokonaisia sanoja muodostamaan lauseita, vain minun rakas, itsep\u00e4inen kieleni ilmaisee itse\u00e4\u00e4n suffikseilla ja postpositioilla.
Luulen, ett\u00e4 vain suomen kielell\u00e4 “rakastan sinua” kuulostaa syv\u00e4lliselt\u00e4, vahvalta, salaper\u00e4iselt\u00e4, niin kuin todellinen rakkaus on.
