BLOCADA CONTINENTALA / CONTINENTAL BLOCKADE

N-aveam a ne teme de revoluții
și nici de învins piedici;
toate aventurile noastre se
petreceau la gura sobei;

… și apoi, lovituri în ușă
– ca niște munci ale câmpului bine făcute:
Strânsă în halatul ei de spital,
femeia-câine îți aducea un mesaj despre tine:
„Fenomenele mari nu se repetă!
Ai privit îndeajuns în creierul tău;
îndeajuns i-ai spălat cu vorbe spaimele mici,
o religie la fața locului, asta e!
Inventează acum o religie!”
Mi-e teamă că n-am să pot descrie întocmai;
și astăzi: țipătul unei femei din blocul de alături;
un violonist cu aceeași gamă tristă subțire prin ceafă;
… și totuși:
O după-amiază în care sentimentele te sufocau
într-o blocadă continentală
și toate utopiile ar fi vrut să fie scrise de tine;
și toate zăpezile ar fi vrut să te viseze;
nemuritor…

CONTINENTAL BLOCKADE

We had no revolutions to fear,
nor fatigues to undergo;
all our adventures
were by the fire-side,
and all our migrations from
the blue bed to the brown.

(Oliver Goldsmith – The Vicar of Wakefield)

A suspicious afternoon,
like a black cat that would suddenly start talking
and you, determined for the umpteenth time to start
a balanced life
(looking around,
poetry would have instantly decapitated the new style!)
Yes, an afternoon
when red-headed screams sprang from under your fingernails
– and how could you see with such fingernails…
Heavy,
the feelings rolled off the fresh paper:
– With what part of the body does one read poetry, mother?
you screamed in fright and with arms torn by the wind…
– What body part does one have left after
writing poems, mother?

… and then, knocks on the door
– like some field work well done:
Wrapped in her hospital gown,
the dog-woman brought you a message about yourself:
“Great phenomena do not repeat themselves!
You have looked into your brain long enough;
long enough you have washed away its little fears with words,
a religion on the spot, that’s it!
Now invent a religion!”
I’m afraid I won’t be able to describe it accurately;
but the signs of the dreadful adventure can still be encountered
today: the scream of a woman from the block next door;
a violinist with the same sad thin scale across the back of his neck;
grandma’s slippers (comfy, as they are no longer made); and other
random works of nature.
Your life – a perfect little crime.
… And yet:
An afternoon when feelings suffocated you
in a continental blockade
and all the utopias wanted to be written by you;
and all the snows would wanted to dream of you;
and the fiancé
and the dog-woman, with her arms torn by the wind…
Young animal, you’d say.
Young animal!
– and his little fright; speaking, he could become
immortal…
