ia forma uitată a trupului tău …

Today we part

Today we no longer sing nor smile.
Sitting at the beginning of the season chant,
today we part facile
like the waters parted from the land.

All is so natural in our silence.
We tell each other, “That’s the way it should be …”
Next to us, the blue reliance
for the thought-out truths is testimony.

Soon you will be the azure of the seas,
I will be the earth with all sins.
Big birds will look for you in the breeze
carrying the breath of food in their chins.

People will think we are enemies.
Between us, the world will stand still
like a forest for hundreds of years
full of beasts with striped fur twill.

No one will know that we are still so close
and that, in the evening, my soul,
like the shore that from the water forms,
takes the forgotten shape of your whole…

Today we don’t kiss, each other we don’t want.
Sitting at the beginning of the season chant,
today we part facile
like the waters parted from the land.

Not too long ’till you’ll be the mirrored sky
I will be the black sun, the earth billow.
Not too long ’till wind will blow high.
Not too long ’till the wind will blow …

Sub brazi, el strigă îndemnându-i spre creste:

– Taci.

Mai bine ia cornul şi sună întruna.
Să suni până mor, către cerul senin…
Atunci asfinţi după creste luna
şi cornul sună, însă foarte puţin.

The boar with silver fangs

A Prince from Levant in love with the hunting
through dark forest’s heart was making his way,
For finding his path through the bushes hard fighting,
was playing his bone flute and to his men he’d say:

– Let’s go for the hunt in the deep wilderness
the hunt of the wild boar with silvery fangs,
who daily is shedding in hollowly stillness
the hoof and the fur and his glimmering glance…

– Mylord, said his servants with the bugle callings,
That boar, which you want, won’t be coming this way.
Let’s rather go hunting the horn headed beings,
or red coated foxes, or small hares astray…

But the Prince passed on smiling pursuing his road
contemplating in silence the colorful trees,
he paid no attention to the kind doe’s abode
nor to lynx always smiling with bright eyes at ease.

Beneath the tall beeches he passed branches taming:
– Behold how he’s spinning our distance to narrow
the silver fang boar not too far from our aiming
let’s hit him at once with one strike wooden arrow!…

– Mylord, is the water under the foliage lush,
said shrewdly the servant with a voice like a pang
Yet he turned and he answered kindly: – Hush…
and the water was shining like a boar silver fang.

Beneath elms he was hurrying the scattered cortege,
– Behold how he’s roaring and grubbing his marrow:
the silver fang boar not too far from our edge
let’s hit him at once with one strike iron arrow!…

– Mylord, is the grass quivering in a rush,
said daring the servant with a smile like a pang.
Yet he turned and he answered kindly: – Hush…
and the grass was shining like a boar silver fang.

Beneath firs he was shouting urging them to the crest.
-Behold where it is his place to retire
the boar silver fang from the tales I possessed:
let’s hit him at once with a strike fire arrow!…

– Mylord, is the Moon shimmering in a gush
said with spurn the servant with a laugh like a pang.
Yet he turned and he answered kindly: – Hush…
and the moon was shining like a boar silver fang.

Alas! while the pale stars on heaven all sang
As he bent over water while the sun set it must
appeared a gigantic wild boar and his fang
ripped him wildly through the red bloody dust.

-What strange beast attacks me and lets me for bleeding
and stops without mercy my boar silver’s hunt?
What dark bird in moonlight is crying my pleading?
What dead leaf, unseen leaf is beating me blunt?…

– Mylord, the boar with the fangs like the silver
himself roaring took you under trees for the smash.
You can hear the bark of bloodhounds with a quiver…
Yet the Prince turned, and he answered kindly: – Hush…

Better take the horn and ceaselessly blow it,
and blow ‘till I’m dead to the heavenly plead…

Then the moon disappeared slowly from its moonlit
and the hunt horn was blowing, but too little indeed.

3. Foamea de Unu

Voi, numere-n delir, scrumite grupuri, cum pot sa va slavesc?
Unu) vai! e numarat in toate fragmentele – ce-l neaga putrezind.

The hunger for one

You, numbers in delirium, ashen groups, how can I glorify you?
Love, you – be the red wind that blew through the bodies and, for a moment, in their flesh made the whole burn: he who shines like a god’s shoulder, who is neither the absence of number, nor number! teach me how to feed here a bird that has no time to fly because it perishes – chick – in its own egg, a breath that breathes into another, a song that is nothing but an echo; and, especially, these vague reflections in a broken mirror, as if the ocean were spitting angels on the shores right in the bed we were lying in.
Whose sand are we?
He who cannot count (always being only
One) alas! is counted in all the fragments – which denies it rotting.

4. Amintirea poetului

Zvelt, înteţind sub asfalt o furtună
de sunete, vesel şi-n grabă trecea
ca ploaia cu fluiere lungi, cu profilul
abia şlefuit de idei.

Ochi pe sub fixe pleoape poroase,
cum numai Sibiul deschide, citeau
în zodia lui, lăcrimau lângă Peştii
cu gurile pline de mâl.

O, însă ce este trecerea unui
poet, dacă nu sfâşiere şi vis
cu care suav-înnoptatele Genii
îşi satură gravele corzi?

Tare gelos e adâncul pe tot ce-a
cuprins întru sine; şi numai când, jos,
o mare iubire-şi asumă tăcerea,
se naşte un cântec aici.

Noi, oare noi fără gingaşul sprijin
al celui răpit, am mai fi cântăreţi?
Muţenia lui ne-nfloreşte pe limbă;
grăind, îi rămânem datori.

Iată – el trece, şi-asfaltul începe
sub tălpile noastre să cânte, uimit,
şi astfel noi înşine, credem, când preajma
ne judecă totuşi poeţi.

The memory of the poet

Slender, intensifying under the asphalt
a storm of sounds, merry and in a hurry, passed
like the rain with long whistles, with a profile
barely polished by ideas.

Eyes under fixed porous eyelids,
as only Sibiu opens, read
in his zodiac, cried near the Pisces
with mouths full of mud.

Oh, but what is the passage of a poet,
if not tear and dream
with which the gentle-dark Geniuses
saturate their solemn strings?

Deeply jealous is the deep of all
that embraced within itself; and only when, below,
a great love assumes its silence,
a song is born here.

Would we, without the tender support
of the kidnapped, still be singers?
His silence blossoms on our tongues.
speaking, we owe him.

Look – he passes, and the asphalt begins
to sing beneath our feet, amazed,
and so, we ourselves, we believe, when the purlieu
however, is judging us poets.

5. Exista

exista
o multime de chipuri
in care n-am sa te pot pastra

exista
milioane de cuvinte
ce-mi vor putrezi in ureche

exista
o iarba
care se va da la o parte
ca tu sa poti creste
necontenit alta

fii
zi de zi
binevenita!

There is

there is
a lot of faces
I won’t be able to keep you in

there is
millions of words
that will rot in my ear

there is
a grass
that will sidestep
so that you can grow
incessantly another

Be
every day
welcomed!

MARIANA CODRUT (1.11.1956)

1. noua zi

– i-a găurit capul.

the new day

The nestling swallow under the eaves started chirping. Of course, greeting the new day. Well, why not?, the walls had begun to whiten, the dawn was breaking. Blushing flushed, mother got out of bed, dressed silently, noiselessly, and went out of the house – with the pig and the hens, it’s no joke at this hour, they break the doors of hunger! And the cow must be milked, because the herd any moment now will pass by the gate.

In the night it rained heavily. With her rubber boots directly on her warm skin, without socks, the mother splashed her way through the muddy yard, now to the barn, now to the cowshed, or to the storeroom, wondering for the thousandth time: man, what would that World War II officer’s wife looked like, fallen off her noble chestnut stud? The poor Russian woman had just left her parents’ neighbors after washing away her female blood in the laver asked for by signs. She had just arrived in the village’s maize on the bank of the Prut River, when a stray bullet – from the Russians? from the Romanians? from the Germans? – pierced her head. That’s how a fellow villager found her, with the face in the mud. And the horse (chestnut, ye, ye, said the householders in whose barn she had freshened up), vanished into thin air! With a green mind, the mother didn’t ask then: but what was the girl like? And even if she had asked, she would probably have been answered just that: pretty lady, man, what more can we say?! Only much later, especially when it was raining, did her mind not escape the obsession: what eyes did the Russian woman have? And the hair …?

God forgive her, poor thing!, she said loudly, pouring the grains into the trough. Then she made a cross, maybe for the thousandth time.

After the mother, the father got up quickly and stealthily barefoot to the window. With one hand holding his drawers, with the other hand setting aside a palm wide the blinds, he peeked outside: the wires of laundry shone adorned with thousands of water beads, the heavy leafy apricot and acacias were wet, the gate and plank fences, wet and black. Only a horizon stripe shone brightly. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw his wife’s red flannel on the way to the well. He should have gotten dressed and set to work because it’s not Sunday. Soon!
He snuck into the other bed at the feet of the sleeping child facing the window. Girlie! girlie!, he murmured soothingly, swallowing his spitting with a noise, while ‑ he carefully slipped his hardened sex between her pink petals …

The nestling swallow under the eaves began to struggle and scream shrilly: the killer of the azure, the killer of the azure, the killer of the azure!
Maybe someone would have understood what it was saying. But no one heard it, all being busy with their own. The first rays of sunlight were touching the sleep-dampened forehead, coming through the little girl’s transparent eyelids. And in the yard, the famished beasts were screaming and flapping their wings, not taking a turn to eat.

*With this literary text Mariana Codrut won the Spiegelungen Prize for short prose for 2020 at the competition “Microlite: beyond Celan”, organized by the Institute für Deutsche Kultur und Geschichte Südosteuropas of the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich.
As a result, “New Day” “was published in magazines in Germany and Ukraine.

2. drum rece

singur o poveste. însă, la fel de abur,
de imponderabil ca atunci cînd eşti fericit,
îţi dai seama că ai uitat toate cuvintele.
doar apa foşneşte dedesubt încontinuu.

cold road

so as not to obey, stand alone, it is the century of obedience.
so as not to adhere, stand alone, it is the century of adherence.
so as not to “comply with others”, stand alone.
it is the century of not getting out of line.

even when you miss a little
even the chatter meant to kill the silence
– silence is the greatest scarecrow of the time -,
you choose to be alone. an individualist, a shady fellow!

sitting under the trees with your head bowed on a book
(jokingly now and then you fear
for the bare back of your neck), you are happy:
you just found out

that the cobbled path to the county road
where the cold blued you as a child is called
cold road, that cold road was also over the village,
the path of migrating birds to the delta.

but: on days when you no longer understand anything
and the books don’t tell you anything
and the stranger is also parting with himself.
when you hear the pulse of loneliness beating rhythmically
in your head like a hammer, your anxiety rises
its blood-soaked snout from your chest,
self-assured and greedy like the lion
riding on the antelope pinned to the ground.

powerless for days and days on the one-finger ice
(what transparency!), you suddenly come alive to the sight
of the faces from the depths. still bent over,
the irrational shapes to distinguish
in their fan of meanings, you try to tell yourself
alone a story. but just as steamy,
as imponderable as when you’re happy,
you realize you’ve forgotten all the words.
only the water rustles underneath continuously.

3. (împărţit…)

împărţit între umilinţă
şi orgolii dezastruoase
primind în plex propriul
vaier răsfrînt de cuvinte
el – un condiment preţios
scos de zile mari
pentru vînatul la tavă –
îţi reaminteşte
cînd nu e cazul:
eu sînt poetul!

(din vol. “existenţă acută”, C.R., 1994)

(divided…)

divided between humility
and disastrous egos
receiving in the plexus his own
groan reflected in words
he – a precious spice
taken out on special days
for the hunt on the platter –
reminds you
when it is not the case:
I am the poet!

(From the volume “acute existence”, C.R., 1994)

n-are nici o logică pentru mine –
eu sînt asociala incapabilă să audă
vorbele zise tuturor deodată.
zi-mi doar mie ceva
(dar nu singurătate, nu frică
sau revoltă, le ştiu),
ceva puternic pînă la implozie.
voi fi numai ochi şi urechi
şi voi înţelege totul în felul
în care iarna înţelege ningînd.

Lord, what you say to everyone

what you say at once to everyone
makes no sense to me-
I am the asocial unable to hear
the words told to everyone at once.
tell only me something
(but not loneliness, not fear
or revolt, I know them),
something powerful to the point of implosion.
I will be only eyes and ears
and I will understand everything the way
winter understands by snowing.

5. luna asta

this moon

floating above like a fluffy duck
(we are in deep, below)
it has nothing to do with our loneliness,
with the pure forehead of mother from her youth
exterminated by Romanian history
or with the bright screen in which I see myself
it’s from another country.

how the rain flows

I listen to the drumming of rain on the blocks, its pure frankness. its absurd frankness in a country where even death is a politician: it doesn’t care about appearances, nor what hides beneath them, one goal pumping its blood to the heart – to win.

how the rain flows in a country of politicians, a theater in which the leading characters were replaced by monkeys with red bottoms… be it winter, be it summer, the monkeys run away from the light: down under, in the rat’s nest. up, in the attic with flour steam drugged moths. but they have no fear: flags of disaster, noble skins on sticks flutter on the roofs.

7. ritual

în fiecare dimineaţă
rup cordonul visului
şi intru în realitate
cu inima grea de teamă
de ruşine
de gînduri stătute.
mă învîrt printre voi
– animal stupid care
oprindu-se în răstimpuri
priveşte în jur suspicios
şi ţipă fără pricină.
în fiecare dimineaţă
pornesc în căutarea
unei lumi vii

ritual

every morning
I break the dream cord
and enter reality
with a heart heavy of fear
of shame
of stale thoughts.
I’m among you
– stupid animal that
stopping at times
looks around suspiciously
and screams for no reason.
every morning
I start looking
for a living world
with a heavy heart
of fear
of loathing
of stale thoughts.

(Poem published in the vol. “acute existence”, Cartea Românească, 1994, censored from the previous vol. “habits of the summer night”, C.R., 1989)

8. macesul din magazia de lemne

in acest ultim patrar de secol fara nici un curaj sa fii inlocuitoarea domnisoarei batrane moarte (in aprilie) de lupus tuberculos
(cate un starc argintiu in balta argintie tremura soarele toamnei).
sa fii o mica pata portocalie vaslind in centimetrul tau de aer printre cateva planuri de lectie si imaginea domnisoarei profesoare cu trei pisici in brate.
(in fata, campul deschis inspaimanta).
cand in magazia de lemne
macesul suporta dogoarea intunericulu

the rosehip in the woodshed

(a silver heron in the silver pond trembles the autumn sun).
to be a small orange spot oaring in your inch of air between a few lesson plans and the image of the teacher with three cats in her arms.
(in front, the open field frightens).
when in the woodshed
the rosehip bears the sting of darkness.

tu ai cules perele din iarbă! vîntului nu-i pasă

nature is not bovaric

nature is not bovaric, it’s not pretending to be someone else:
nor fed with romantic readings queen-night
never forgets her place. the rain doesn’t walk through the city fussy
like an actress and, even when it falls obliquely, speaks directly,
bluntly, and she’s sick of oracular mumbling.
wasps drunk on pear alcohol
they have ecstatic visions without asking our permission – you know it,
you picked pears from the grass! the wind doesn’t care
what we think of it, the thunder does not
show off itself either (I hasten to tell you all,
there is not much time left for us…).
they all speak their mother tongue innately, naturally,
with greatness. why shouldn’t we do the same?

1. Contraste

Sunt bucurii care-ntristează,
Sunt întristări ce fericesc,
Sunt zile fără de lumină
Şi nopţi adânci ce strălucesc.

Sunt adevăruri ce doboară
Şi sunt minciuni care ridică,
Sunt împăraţi, atotputernici
Ce însă tremură de frică.

Sunt vieţi ce-au strălucit în viaţă,
Dar când s-au stins parcă n-au fost,
Palate care nu pot ţine
Cât o cocioabă adăpost.

Sunt oameni albi pe dinafară,
Dar negri în adâncul lor
Şi negri în afară, negri,
Da-n ei de-un alb strălucitor.

Sunt dulciuri ce-amărăsc ca fierea,
Dar şi amaruri ce-ndulcesc
Sunt nedreptăţi care îndreaptă,
Dreptăţi care nedreptăţesc.

Sunt multe contradicţii, multe:
Sunt uri adânci ce nasc iubiri,
Sunt suferinţi ce-aduc lumină
Şi fericiri nefericiri…

Contrasts

There are joys saddening the life
There are sorrows that makes it glad,
There are days without light nor thrive
And deep nights shining with no shad’.

There are sometimes truths that knock down
And there are lies that elevate
There are strong kings, of great renown
Yet trembling with fear innate.

There are lives that have shone in life,
Yet they went out as if they were not,
Palaces that can’t hold a strife
No more than could a shelter hut.

There are white lads on the outside,
yet black they are in their depths
And black skinned there are, black with pride
Yet shining white in their strengths.

Bitter as gall there may be sweetness
Yet there is bitterness that’s sweet.
There is injustice that does justice
And justice with a deep mislead.

There are many misfits in things:
There is deep hatred with love’s brightness,
There is suffering that light brings
And some unhappy happiness…

2. Din viata

Mi-a bătut în poartă Fericirea
Şi intrând în curte m-a strigat.
Eram dus alături cu iubirea.
A-nchis poarta iute şi-a plecat.

Mi-a bătut de-asemeni Bucuria.
A intrat, a stat sub pomii goi.
N-a văzut pe nimeni să-i vorbească
Şi-a plecat grăbită înapoi.

Într-o seară, luminând pe stradă,
Mi-a bătut şi Steaua mea — de sus
Tot aşa, eram plecat aproape,
Şi-a strâns fusta-n mână şi s-a dus.

Mi-a bătut în poartă şi Necazul.
Eram dus departe. Liniştit,
S-a întins pe ţolul de la uşă
Şi m-a aşteptat până-am venit.

From life

On my door once knocked the Happiness
Coming to the yard called me by name.
I was out, with love in tenderness.
Quickly closed the gate and left the same.

Also, the Joy came to see me once.
Came inside and sat beneath bare trees.
Saw no one with whom to talk, and thus
Quietly, took her leave with much appease.

One blessed evening, shining on the street,
My Star also called me – from the sky
I was not gone far, just a few feet
She tightened her skirt and left me sigh.

On my door the Sorrow knocked one day.
Without worry far I have been gone.
She lay down on my doorstep to stay
And she waited until my return.

3. Tuturor

Vine-o vreme, vreme-adevărată,
Când dureri și visuri și iubiri,
Tot ce-ați strâns și adunat în viață,
Toate se prefac în amintiri.

Vine timpul apoi de le-adună
Și le spală-n fluviul lui spumos,
Până ce din ele, din oricare,
Nu rămâne decât ce-i frumos.

Luați aminte, toate pier odată,
Nu veți mai putea să le priviți.
Faceți-vă amintiri, prieteni,
Unde să aveți să vă gândiți.

N-așteptați, strângeți-le pe cale,
Din orice iubire sau pustiu,
Cine n-are amintiri de tânăr,
O să fie singur mai târziu.

To all

There will come a time, a real time,
When the pains, and dreams, and all the loves,
Everything you’ve gathered in your life,
They will all turn into memories.

Then the time will gather everything
Just to wash them in its foamy lanes,
Until of them all, of anything
Only what is beautiful remains.

So, remember, they’ll perish once all
You’ll no longer watch them nor redeem
Memories, my friends, make memories
To hold on of where to think and dream.

Do not wait and reap them on your way,
Out of any love or disappoint,
Who has not the memories of youth,
Later will be lonely and void.

A murit. Vrea cineva să-l urmeze?
Numai bocete tradiţionale.

Quarantine

The pain isn’t contagious,
I assure you, the pain cannot be transmitted,
No nerve twisted in my peer’s body
causes excruciating touching inside me.
The pain is not contagious, the pain
Singles out more atrocious than the walls,
No quarantine isolates so perfectly,
It’s trivial what I say – that’s the argument.
Lord, how much literature we contain!
The feelings – remember? – we’ve learned about them yet in school.
Around the bed of the dying they cry,
But no one is contaminated by death.
Be calm, watch over the sick altruistically.
You will not take their pain, fear not.
He died. Does anyone want to follow him?
Only traditional lamentations.

2. Am obosit

Am obosit să mă nasc din idee,
Am obosit să nu mor –
Mi-am ales o frunză,
Iată din ea mă voi naşte,
După chipul şi asemănarea ei, uşor
Seva răcoroasă o să mă pătrunză
Şi nervurile îmi vor fi fragede moaşte;
De la ea o să învăţ să tremur, să cresc,
Şi de durere să mă fac strălucitoare;
Apoi să mă desprind de pe ram
Ca un cuvânt de pe buze.
În felul acela copilăresc
În care
Se moare
La frunze.

I am tired

I’m tired of being born from idea,
I’m tired of not dying –
I chose a leaf,
Behold, I will be born from it,
In her image and likeness, easy
The cool vigor will penetrate me
And my nervures will be tender relics.
From it I will learn to tremble, to grow,
And of pain to become bright.
Then to get off the branch
Like a word from the lips.
In that childish way
In which
one dies
amongst leaves.

3. Eu cred

Eu cred ca suntem un popor vegetal,
De unde altfel linistea
In care asteptam desfrunzirea?
Cine-a vazut vreodata
Un copac revoltându-se?

I think

I think we are a vegetal nation,
Where from then the peace in which
We are waiting for defoliation.
Where from the courage
To slip on the sleep’s slide
Up to the edge of death,
Being sure
That we’ll be able to
Be born again?
I think we are a vegetal nation –
Who ever saw
A tree revolting?

4. Eclipsa

Fiare gonind spre mine hamesite,

Eclipse

I give up mercy hardly as an addiction,
With mercy I’ve been drugged since infancy.
White starry ridiculed I cry
near the fearful, the beaten, the lowly.

I cry for stupid and the stupid beat me,
Under my barren star they smile shiftily
Of tenderness more and more I darken
And I perish of humanism and pity.

Heartwarming hands I stretch out to comfort
Beasts chasing me famished and cruel
And I am sorry that I wouldn’t kiss
The snout that comes to me to kill.

I didn’t even live not to offend someone,
My knees caught roots in the earthly dust,
And my life was wasted trying to grow
To my wings fingernails, for I must.

5. Restul pe masa

Am o deprindere monstruoasa aproape
Nu-mi place sa fiu datoare nimanui.
Doctorului care ma vindeca ii trimit flori,
Pentru sanatate garoafe
Si suntem chit.
Ospatarului ii las restul pe masa,
Celui care imi face-un cadou
Ii fac unul mai mare,
Celui care-mi surade-i surad,
Celui care-mi ranjeste-i surad.
Inchei toate socotelile in felul acesta,
Ramanand deasupra,
Taind toate puntile
Si, cateodata,
Ma cuprinde-o dorinta nebuna
Sa fiu recunoscatoare cuiva,
Sa ma tarasc in genunchi multumind,
Sa strig: „Nu sunt vrednica
Nici dandu-mi viata sa inapoiez bunatate atata!“
Dar in urma mea totu-i platit.

The change on the table

I have an almost monstrous habit
I don’t like being indebted to anyone.
To the doctor that heals me I send flowers,
for health carnations
and we are even.
To the waiter I leave the change on the table,
To the one who gives me a present
I give a bigger one,
I smile at the one who smiles at me,
I smile at the one who smirks at me.
I close all accounts this way,
Remaining above all things,
Burning all bridges
And, sometimes,
I feel a mad urge
to be grateful to someone
to crawl on my knees thanking,
To scream: ” I am not worthy
to return so much kindness
not even giving my life!”
But, behind me, everything is paid.

Stiu ca-i urât sa spui “Sunt cea mai frumoasa femeie”,
Si toti trecatorii adulmeca ploaia sa-i simta mirosul,
Pe-o asemenea ploaie poti sa te-ndragostesti fulgerator,
Toti trecatorii sunt îndragostiti,
Si eu te astept.
Doar tu stii –
Iubesc ploile,
Iubesc cu patima ploile, înnebunitele ploi si ploile calme,
Ploile feciorelnice si ploile-dezlantuite femei…

Rain spell

I love the rains,
passionately I love the rains, the gone insane rains and the tender rains,
the virginal rains and the rains-women unleashed,
the fresh rains and the boring rains without an end,
I love the rains, passionately I love the rains,
I like to welter myself through their white, tall grass,
I like to break their leaves and to walk with them in my teeth,
to make men dizzy, watching me so.
I know that it’s bad to say: “I’m the most beautiful woman!”
It is bad and, maybe, it isn’t even true,
yet let me then, when it rains,
only then, when it rains,
to say the magic formula: “I’m the most beautiful woman”.
I’m the most beautiful woman because it rains
and the fringes of the rain look good on my hair,
I’m the most beautiful woman because it’s wind
and the dress struggles desperately to hide my knees,
I’m the most beautiful woman because
you are far away gone and I’m waiting for you,
and you know that I’m waiting for you.
I’m the most beautiful woman and I know how to wait
and yet I wait.
There is in the air the alive scent of love,
and all the passers smell the rain to feel its scent,
on this kind of rain one can be lovestruck,
all the passers are in love,
and I’m waiting for you.
Only you know –
I love the rains,
passionately I love the rains, the gone insane rains and the tender rains,
the virginal rains and the rains-women unleashed.

7. Intr-o rana

Traim intr-o rana
Fara sa stim
Al cui este trupul ranit,
Nici de ce,
Singura certitudine este durerea
Care ne inconjoara,
Durerea
Pe care prezenta noastra
O infecteaza
Cand incearca s-o vindece…

In a wound

We live in a wound
Not knowing
Whose is the wounded body,
Nor why.
The only certainty is the pain
That surrounds us,
The pain
That our presence
Infects it
While trying to heal it …

8. Remember

Toţi -oraşul, ţara, planeta –
Dormeau.
La urma urmei,
Ce altceva ar fi putut face,
Mă întrebam
Şi-i priveam înduioşată cum dorm:

Remember

Everyone – the city, the country, the planet –
was sleeping.
After all,
What else could they have done,
I was wondering
While watching them tenderly
how they slept:
Some with elegance and grace,
Others rude, sprawling over the others,
Others writhing, toiled by nightmares,
By the remorse of being asleep,
Others, on the contrary, happy
That they finally managed,
With neuroleptics, with yoga exercises,
To sleep.
A sea of inert bodies –
Covering up to horizon
The streets, the valleys, the mountains –
On whose waves anyone
(Provided he was awake
Or at least a sleepwalker)
Could move forward
(But towards what?),
A sea without shores, inert,
Almost dead.
Almost dead?
And suddenly I was terrified
That they will no longer be able to wake up
At dawn,
That they will forget until then the gestures of awakening,
That they will even forget the sleep,
This last proof of being.
And I started shouting at them –
I beg you; I conjure you
Don’t forget that you are sleeping,
Remember
That you are alive …

9. Cine dintre noi

Erai
Nespus de înalt și de subțire,
Știam de unde-ncepi
Și unde mă sfârșesc,
Îți găseam ușor
Buzele, gâtul,
Clavicula dulce,
Umărul copilăresc.
Demult, îmi amintesc,
Eram doi,
Țin minte cum ne țineam de mână…
Cine-a fost înfrânt dintre noi?
Cine-a putut să rămână?
Singurul trup este al tău
Sau al meu?
Și mi-e atât de dor
De cine?
Numai tacând,
Cu ochii-nchisi, cu dintii strânsi,
Mai pot sa te distrug
Cu greu
În mine.

Which of us

When you leave,
I don’t know which of us left,
When I reach out
I don’t know if I’m not looking for myself,
When I say: I love you,
I don’t know if I’m not telling myself
And I’m ashamed.
Yesteryear
I knew how you looked like,
You were
Extremely tall and thin,
I knew where you started
And where I ended up,
I could easily find
your lips, neck,
sweet collarbone,
childish shoulder.
A long time ago, I remember,
There were two of us,
I remember holding hands…
Which of us was defeated?
Who could stay?
The only body is yours
Or mine?
And I miss so much
Who?
Just keeping quiet,
With his eyes closed, teeth clenched,
I can hardly
destroy you
in me.

10.Printre clipe

Ca floarea tăiată
Cu petale-aripe
Ți-amintești cum cădeai
Printre clipe?

Și clipele cum
Se dădeau la o parte
Să te-ajute s-ajungi
În adâncul din carte,

Unde stelele moarte
Se transformă-n poeme
Și nu e târziu,
Și nu e devreme

Să pierzi veșnicia,
Să renunți și să ierți.
Ți-amintești întunericul
Dintre coperți?

Among winks

Like the flower cut
With petals wings
Do you remember how you fell
Among winks?

And how the moments
were set aside
To help you get there
in the book’s deep sight,

Where the dead stars
turn themselves into poems
And it’s not too late,
nor too early is

To lose eternity,
To give up, forgive others
Do you recall the darkness
Between the covers?

11. Copilărie

Din oglindă mă privea un trup firav
Cu claviatura coastelor distinctă,
Inima-apăsa pe clape grav
Şi-ncerca să-apară în oglindă.

N-am văzut-o niciodată, dar ştiam,
Ca-ntr-un joc de-a baba-oarba, că-i ascunsă
(Precum inima salcâmului din geam
Coşul pieptului de crengi o face frunză).

Mă-ntrebam de unde l-a-nvăţat şi dacă
E aievea cântu-i uniform,
Şi ca nu cumva în somn să tacă,
Mi-era frică seara să adorm.

Childhood

From the mirror a frail body looked at me
With the distinct clavier of ribs
The heart pressed solemnly on the key
Trying to appear in mirror’s gleams.

Never have I seen it, yet I knew
That is hidden, like in playing hide-and-seek,
(As the heart of acacia too
the chest of twigs makes it a leaf meek.)

Wondering where from she learned her beat,
Was it real her song, soothing and light,
and afraid that she’ll stop in my sleep
Didn’t want to fall asleep at night.

LUCIAN BLAGA (9.05.1885-6.05.1961)

1. Noi si pamantul

Atâtea stele cad în noaptea asta.
Demonul noptii tine parca-n mâni pamântul
si sufla peste-o iasca
naprasnic sa-l aprinda.
În noaptea asta-n care cad
atâtea stele, tânarul sau trup
de vrajitoare-mi arde-n brate
ca-n flacarile unui rug.
Nebun,
cenusa,
noi si – pamântul.

We and the earth

So many stars fall tonight.
the demon of the night seems to take hold of the earth
and blows over a tinder
fiercely to light it up.
In this night when
so many stars fall, her young
witch body burns into my arms
like the flames of a pyre.
Foul,
I stretch out my arms as tongues of fire
to melt the snow of your naked shoulders,
and to absorb, hungry to devour
your power, your blood, your pride, your spring, all.
At dawn when the day will ignite the night,
When the ashes of night will perish carried
to the west by a wind,
at dawn I’d like to be both also
ashes,
we and – the earth.

2. Vei plange mult ori vei zambi

Eu
nu mă căiesc,
c-am adunat în suflet şi noroi-
dar mă gândesc la tine.
Cu gheare de lumină
o dimineaţă-ţi va ucide-odată visul,
că sufletul mi-aşa curat,
cum gândul tău il vrea,
cum inima iubirii tale-l crede.
Vei plânge mult atunci ori vei ierta?

Will you cry much, or will you smile?

do not regret,
that I gathered in my soul also mud-
but I’m thinking about you.
With claws of light
one morning will kill once your dream,
that my soul is so pure,
as your thought wants it,
as the heart of your love believes it.
Will you cry much then, or will you forgive?
Will you cry much, or will you smile?
Of that morning’s rays,
in which I will tell you with no shadow of remorse:
“Don’t you know that only from the muddy bottom lakes grows the lotus?”

3. Scrisoare

Letter

I wouldn’t write you even now this line,
but the roosters crowed three times in the night –
and I had to scream:
Lord, Lord, whom have I disowned?

I’m older than you, Mother,
otherwise, the same, as you know me:
a little drooped
and bent over the world’s questions.

I don’t know even today why you sent me into the light.
Only to walk among things,
and do them justice by telling
who is the truer and who is more beautiful?
My hand stops: it’s too little.
My voice goes out: it’s too little.
Why you did you send me into the light, Mother,
Why did you send me?

My
body falls at your feet
heavy like a dead bird.

4. Ghimpii

Eram copil. Mi-aduc aminte, culegeam
odată trandafiri sălbatici.
Aveau atâţia ghimpi,
dar n-am vrut să-i rup.
credeam că-s muguri-
şi-au să înflorească.

Te-am întâlnit apoi pe tine.
O, câţi ghimpi, câţi ghimpi aveai!
dar n-am voit să te despoi –
credeam c-o să-nflorească.

Azi toate astea-mi trec
pe dinainte şi zâmbesc.
Zâmbesc şi hoinăresc prin văi
Zburdalnic în bătaia vântului.
Eram copil.

The thorns

I was a kid. I remember, I was picking
once wild roses.
They had so many thorns,
but I did not want to break them.
I thought them being buds-
that will flourish.

Then I met you.
Oh, how many thorns, how many thorns did you have!
but I did not want to strip you –
I thought they will flourish.

Today I see again all of these
and I smile
I smile and wander through the valleys
Sprightly in the wind.
I was a kid.

5. Frumoase maini

Presimt:
frumoase mâni, cum îmi cuprindeţi astăzi cu
căldura voastră capul plin de visuri,
aşa îmi veţi ţinea odată
şi urna cu cenuşa mea.

Visez:

Beautiful hands

I sense:
beautiful hands, as you hold today
with your warmth my head full of dreams,
thus, you will also keep once
the urn with my ashes.

I dream:
beautiful hands when warm lips will blow
in the wind my ashes
that you’ll keep between your hands like in a chalice,
you’ll be like some flowers,
from which the breeze spreads – the pollen.

And I cry:
you’ll be so young then, beautiful hands.

Lumina altora
sugrumă vraja nepătrunsului ascuns
în adâncimi de întuneric,
dar eu,
eu cu lumina mea sporesc a lumii taină –
şi-ntocmai cum cu razele ei albe luna
nu micşorează, ci tremurătoare
măreşte şi mai tare taina nopţii,
aşa îmbogăţesc şi eu întunecata zare
cu largi fiori de sfânt mister
şi tot ce-i neînţeles
se schimbă-n neînţelesuri şi mai mari
sub ochii mei-
căci eu iubesc
şi flori şi ochi şi buze şi morminte.

I do not crush the world’s corolla of wonders

I do not crush the world’s corolla of wonders
and I don’t kill
with my mind, the mysteries I meet
in my way
in flowers, in eyes, on lips or graves.
The light of others
strangles the spell of the impenetrable hidden
in the depths of darkness,
but I,
I with my light enlarge the mystery of the world –
and as the moon with her white rays
doesn’t diminish, but quivering
enhances even more the mystery of the night,
so, I enrich the unknown horizon
with wide shudder of holy mystery
and all that is unknown
becomes even greater unknown
under my eyes,
for I love
flowers and eyes and lips and graves.

7. Liniste

Atâta linişte-i în jur de-mi pare că aud

ce nu-i al meu.

vin,
vin sa-şi trăiasca mai departe
în noi
viaţa netrăita.
Atâta linişte-i în jur de-mi pare că aud

Silence

There’s so much silence around that it seems to me that I hear
how the moon rays hit the windows.
In my soul
awoke a strange voice
and a song sings in me a longing
which isn’t mine.

It is told that the ancestors that died before their time
with blood still young in their veins,
with great ardor in blood,
with lively sun in their ardor,
return
return to live forwards
in us
their unlived life.

There’s so much silence around it seems to me that I hear
how the moon rays hit the windows.

Oh, who knows, – my soul – , in whose chest you will sing
yourself once over centuries
on sweet chords of silence,
on the darkness’ harp – your strangled longing
and your broken joy for life? Who knows?
Who knows?

8. Lacrimile

Odata, istovit de-albastrul prea senin
al primaverii,
cu suflet de copil intaiul om
cazu cu fata-n pulberea pamantului:
“Stapane, ia-mi vederea,
ori daca-ti sta-n putinta impainjeneste-mi ochii
c-un giulgiu,
sa nu mai vad
nici flori, nici cer, nici zambetele Evei si nici nori,
caci, vezi — lumina lor ma doare”.
Si-atuncea Milostivul intr-o clipa de-ndurare
ii dete — lacrimile.

The tears

When banished from the nest of eternity
the first man
was passing meditative and astonished through the woods or on the fields
scolded and tormented
by the light, the horizon, the clouds – and from each flower
the paradise was piercing him with a memory –
and the first man, the wanderer, didn’t know to cry.
once, exhausted by the too clear blue
of the spring,
with the soul of a child the first man
fell on his face in the dust:
“Master, take my sight,
or if you can blur my eyes
with a shroud,
not to see
neither flowers nor heaven nor the smiles of Eve nor clouds,
for, you see, their light hurts. “
And then the Merciful in a moment of grace
gave him – the tears.

9 Cântec în doi

Şi vine toamna iar
ca dup-un psalm aminul.
Doi suntem gata să gustăm
cu miere-amestecat veninul.

Doi suntem gata s-ajutăm
brinduşile ardorii
să înflorească iar în noi
şi-n toamna-aceasta de apoi.

Doi suntem, când cu umbra lor
ne împresoară-n lume norii.
Ce gânduri are soarele cu noi —
nu stim, dar suntem doi.

Song for two

And autumn comes again
as after’a psalm the amen.
We both are ready to degust
the honey-mixed venom then.

We both are ready now to help
the crocuses of ardor
to blossom yet again in us
and in this late fall, thus.

We are two, when with their shadow
the clouds surround us in the world.
What thoughts does the sun have with us –
we don’t know, but there’s two of us.

10. Cantare vantului

“În iubire nimeni, nimeni
nu-şi ţine cuvântul.
Veşnic strâns îmbrăţişat
te-a ţinea numai pământul.”

Astfel cântă sfâşiat
lângă mine vântul,
când la dreapta, când la stânga,
lângă mine vântul.”

A Song to the Wind

“In love no one, no one
ever keeps their promise.
Held forever you will be
only by grave’s solace.”

Thus sings the wind, brokenhearted
nearby my place.
Right and left, right and left
the wind by my place.

11. De Profundis

Inca un an, o zi, un ceas –
si drumuri toate s-au retras
de sub picioare, de sub pas.
inca un an si-un vis
si-un somn si-oi fi
pe sub pamanturi
domn al oaselor
ce drepte dorm.

De Profundis

Another year, and day, and hour
and all the roads retreat their power
from under feet and the step’s bower.
Another year, and dream, and kip
and I’ll be King under lands deep
of all the bones in righteous sleep.

12. 9 Mai 1895

Sat al meu, ce porti în nume
sunetele lacrimei,
la chemari adânci de mume
în cea noapte te-am ales
ca prag de lume
si poteca patimei.

Spre tine cine m-a-ndrumat
din strafund de veac,
în tine cine m-a chemat
fie binecuvântat,
sat de lacrimi fara leac.

The 9th of May 1895

Village of mine carrying in your name
sounds and letters of the tear
to deep call of mothers’ claim
in that night I chose you
threshold of the worldly flame
path of passion of my peer.

Whoever sent me to your core
From the depths of time,
Whoever called me to your door
Blessed be forevermore,
Village of tears without shore.

13. Dorul

Longing

Thirsty I drink your fragrance and I grab your face
with both my hands, as you embrace
a wonder in your soul.
The closeness is burning, as we sit eye to eye.
Yet back you whisper: “I miss you so!”
So cryptically you tell me this and so desirous, as if I’d be
a wanderer on another land.

Woman,
what sea you carry in your heart and who are you?
Sing me once more your longing,
so, I’d listen to you
and all the moments would appear to be some full buds,
from whom shall blossom truly – eternities.

14. Primavara

A cunoaste. A iubi
Înc-o data, iar si iara
a cunoaste-nseamna iarna
a iubi e primavara.

A iubi – aceasta vine
tare de departe-n mine.
A iubi – aceasta vine
tare de departe-n tine.

A cunoaste. A iubi.
Care-i drumul? Ce te-ndeamna?
A cunoaste – ce înseamna?
A iubi – de ce ti-e teama?
printre flori si-n mare iarba?

Printre flori si-n mare iarba,
patima fara pacate
ne rastoarna-n infinit,
cu rumoare si ardoare
de albine re-ncarnate.

Înc-odata, iar si iara,
a iubi e primavara.

Spring

To have knowledge or to love
one more time and then again
to have knowledge means the Winter,
to love means the Springtime’s reign.

This, to love, it comes, you see,
way too from afar in me.
This, to love, it comes, who knew
way too from afar in you.

To have knowledge or to love.
Where’s the path? What compels you?
To have knowledge – what is new?
To love – what is scaring who?
Amid flowers, in tall grass?

Amid flowers, in tall grass,
Passion without any sins,
Overturns us in the vast
With the rumor and the ardor
of reincarnated bees.

One more time and then again
to love means the Springtime’s reign.

15. Autoportret

Lucian Blaga e mut ca o lebădă.
În patria sa
zăpada făpturii ţine loc de cuvânt.
Sufletul lui e în căutare,
în mută, seculară căutare,
de totdeauna,
şi până la cele din urmă hotare.
El caută apa din care bea curcubeul.
El caută apa
din care curcubeul
îşi bea frumuseţea şi nefiinţa.

16. Selfportrait

Lucian Blaga is silent like a swan.
In his country
the snow of the being replaces the word.
His soul is in pursuit
in a silent, secular pursuit
from always
until the last root.
He seeks the water from where the rainbow drinks
He seeks the water
from where the rainbow
drinks its beauty and non-existence.

16. Izvorul noptii

Frumoaso,
ţi-s ochii-aşa de negri încât seara
când stau culcat cu capu-n poala ta
îmi pare
că ochii tăi, adânci, sunt izvorul
din care tainic curge noaptea peste văi
şi peste munţi şi peste seşuri
acoperind pământul
c-o mare de-ntuneric.
Aşa-s de negri ochii tăi,
lumina mea.

The spring of night

Beautiful,
your eyes are so black that in the evening
when I lie down with my head in your lap
It seems to me
that your eyes, the deep, are the source
from which mysteriously the night flows over the valleys
and mountains, and planes
covering the earth
with a sea of darkness.
So black are your eyes,
my light.

17. Psalm

O durere totdeauna mi-a fost singuratatea ta ascunsa,
Dumnezeule, dar ce era sa fac?
Cand eram copil ma jucam cu tine
si-n inchipuire te desfaceam cum desfaci o jucarie.
Apoi salbaticia mi-a crescut,
cantarile mi-au pierit,
si fara sa-mi fi fost vreodata aproape
te-am pierdut pentru totdeauna
in tarana, in foc, in vazduh si pe ape.

Esti muta, neclintita identitate
(rotunjit in sine a este a) ,
nu ceri nimic. Nici macar rugaciunea mea.

Iata, stelele intra in lume
deodata cu intrebatoarele mele tristeti.
Iata, e noapte fara ferestre-n afara.
Dumnezeule, de-acum ce ma fac?
in mijlocul tau ma dezbrac. Ma dezbrac de trup
ca de-o haina pe care-o lasi in drum.

Psalm

Always sadness to me has been your concealed loneliness,
But, Lord, what was I to do?
As a child I used to play with you
and in my mind, I took you to pieces like a toy.

Then wilderness grew stronger inside me,
my songs died,
and without ever feeling you close
I lost you forever
In dust, in fire, in the air, and on waters.

From sunrise to sunset
I am only clay and wound.
You closed yourself in Heaven as in a coffin.
Oh, weren’t you kin more to death
than you are to life,
you would talk to me. From where you are
from earth or from the tale – you would talk to me.

Among the thorns here, show yourself, Lord,
So, I’d know what you expect of me.
Shall I catch in the air the venomous spear
from the depths thrown by another to hurt you beneath your wings.
Or don’t you want anything of me?
You are the mute, still identity
(Rounded itself a is a),
you ask for nothing. Not even for my prayer.

Look, the stars appear into the world
along with my questioning sadness.
Look, it is a night without windows outside.
Lord, from now on what am I to do?
In you I become naked. I take off my mortal flesh
as if it were a coat left on the way.

18. Trei fete

Copilul râde:
“Înţelepciunea şi iubirea mea e jocul! “
Tânărul cântă:
“Jocul şi-nţelepciunea mea-i iubirea! “
Bătrânul tace:
“Iubirea şi jocul meu e-nţelepciunea! “

Three faces

The child laughs:
“My wisdom and love are the game!”
The young man sings:
“My game and wisdom are love!”
The old man is silent:
“My love and game are wisdom!”

19. Gorunul

sicriul meu,
cu fiecare clipă care trece,
gorunule din margine de codru.

The oak

In the clear distance I hear from a tower’s chest
how a bell beats like a heart
and in sweet echoes
It seems to me
that through my veins flow drops of silence, not blood.
Oak from the edge of the forest
why it defeats me
with soft wings so much peace
when I lie in your shadow
while you caress me with your playful leaf?

Oh, who knows? – Maybe
from your trunk it will be carved
not long after, my coffin,
and the peace
which I will taste between its boards
I probably feel it now:
I feel it as your leaf drips it into my soul –
and silenced
I hear the coffin growing in your body,
my coffin,
with each passing moment,
Oak from the edge of the forest.

GEORGE BACOVIA (17.09.1881-22.05.1957)

1. Cogito

Mi-am realizat
Toate profeţiile
Politice.
Sunt fericit…
Frumos
Este cerul
Senin, sau mânios.
Un aforism celebru
Te face să trăieşti…
Nu-i mâini,
Nici azi,
Nici ieri, –
Timpul…

Cogito

I’ve fulfilled
All my political
Prophecies.
I am happy,
Beautiful
Is the sky,
Clear, or angry.
A famous aphorism
Makes one live.
There is no tomorrow,
Nor today,
Neither yesterday-
It’s time -…

2. Noapte de vara

Noaptea-ncet, ticnit se lasă –
Poezie, sau destin –
Luna urcă, somnoroasă, –
Vino, vin!

Este linişte, răcoare,
Codrul e de farmec plin –
Pe sub teii încă-n floare, –
Poezie, sau destin.

În suavele parfume
Poezie, sau destin –
Ori pe unde-ai fi în lume, –
Vino, vin!

Îngerii deasupra noastră
Vor cânta un imn divin –
Ah, ce clară noapte-albastră, –
Poezie, sau destin.

Summer night

Slowly, quietly, night is falling –
Poesy or destiny –
The moon rises sleepy nodding –
Come, I’ll be!

There is silence, freshness hour
Woods are full of ecstasy –
Under linden trees in flower –
Poesy or destiny.

In suave perfumes adorned
Poesy or destiny –
Anywhere you’d be’in the world
Come, I’ll be!

All the angels from above –
Will sing a psalm heavenly –
What a blue night, clear alcove –
Poesy or destiny.

3. Note de primavara

Verde crud, verde crud…
Mugur alb, si roz si pur,
Vis de-albastru si azur,
Te mai vad, te mai aud!

Oh, puncteaza cu-al tau foc,
Soare, soare…
Corpul ce întreg ma doare,
Sub al vremurilor joc.

Dintr-un fluier de rachita,
Primavara,
O copila poposita la fîntîna
Te îngîna
Pe cîmpia clara…

Verde crud, verde crud…
Mugur alb, si roz si pur,
Te mai vad, te mai aud,
Vis de-albastru si azur.

Spring notes

Callow green, callow green…
Bud that’s white, and pink, and pure,
Dream of topaz and azure,
Still, you can be heard and seen.

Oh, please dot with your sweet fire,
sunny sun…
my bone hurting whole in one,
in the game of times entire.

With a willow whistle wild,
Primavera,
a maid arrived at fount anew,
echoes you,
on the fields, chimera.

Callow green, callow green…
Bud that’s white, and pink, and pure,
Still, you can be heard and seen,
Dream of topaz and azure.

4. Ecou de romanta

S-a dus albastrul cer senin
Şi primăvara s-a sfârşit –
Te-am aşteptat în lung suspin,
Tu, n-ai venit!

Şi vara, şi nopţile ei,
S-a dus, şi câmpu-i veştejit –
Te-am aşteptat pe lângă tei,
Tu, n-ai venit!

Târziu, şi toamna a plecat,
Frunzişul tot e răvăşit –
Plângând, pe drumuri, te-am chemat,
Tu, n-ai venit!

Iar, mâini, cu-al iernii trist pustiu,
De mine-atunci nu vei mai şti –
Nu mai veni, e prea târziu,
Nu mai veni!

Echo of a romance

Gone is the clear blue limpid sky
And spring has ended in a numb –
I’ve searched for you with a long sigh,
You did not come!

And summer, and her nights so free,
Has gone, and field is withered glum –
I’ve waited near the linden tree,
You did not come!

Later, the autumn has gone too.
All foliage is a scattered thrum –
Crying, on roads, I called for you,
You did not come!

And ‘morrow winter’s sad desert
Of me you won’t know anymore –
Do not come, it is way too late,
Don’t come no more!

5. Lacustra

De-atâtea nopţi aud plouând,
Aud materia plângând…
Sunt singur, şi mă duce un gând
Spre locuinţele lacustre.

Şi parcă dorm pe scânduri ude,
În spate mă izbeşte-un val –
Tresar prin somn şi mi se pare
Că n-am tras podul de la mal.

Un gol istoric se întinde,
Pe-aceleaşi vremuri mă găsesc…
Şi simt cum de atâta ploaie
Piloţii grei se prăbuşesc.

De-atâtea nopţi aud plouând,
Tot tresărind, tot aşteptând…
Sunt singur, şi mă duce-un gând
Spre locuinţele lacustre.

Lacustrine

So many nights I hear the rain,
I hear the matter cry again…
I’m lonely, and my thoughts may drain
Towards the dwellings lacustrine.

And it’s like sleeping on wet floorboards,
A wave keeps hitting me’n the back —
I shudder in my sleep and reckon
I did not pull the drawbridge back.

An historical void is stretching,
I find myself through the time gaps…
And I feel like because of raining,
The heavy pilots will collapse.

So many nights I hear the rain,
Shuddering, waiting yet again…
I’m lonely, and my thoughts may drain
Towards the dwellings lacustrine.

6. Singuratate, nu te-am voit

Cumplit
E golul singurătăţii!
Sunt ucisul ei…
Singurătatea?
Povara tăcerilor
Sfăşiate de suspine…

Singurătatea…
Ochiul tău
Priveşte îngheţat
În ochiul gândului
Neîmpărtăşit…

Singurătate,
Nu te-am voit!
Viaţa – haină –
M-a dăruit ţie.
Tu m-ai cerut
Vieţii
– Prizonierul tău –
Singurătate…

Oamenii…
Cum i-am iubit…
Dar ei
Nu m-au voit.

Din singurătatea
Vieţii
În singurătatea
Morţii, şi nimeni
Nu înţelege
Acest adânc…
Poeţi, evitaţi
Singurătatea.
Între oameni
E viaţa…
Loneliness. I didn`t want you

Dreadful
Is the void of loneliness!
I am its murdered victim …
Loneliness?
The burden of the silences
torn by sighs …

Loneliness…
Your eye
Looks frozen
Into the eye of the
Unshared thought…

Loneliness,
I didn’t want you!
Life – coat –
Gave me to you.
You asked for me
From life
– Your prisoner –
Loneliness…

People
How I loved them…
But they
They didn’t want me.

Out of the loneliness
of life
Into the solitude
of death, and no one
Understands
This deep…
Poets, avoid
Loneliness.
Between people
It’s life…

1. Dupa melci

Dintr-atatia frati mai mari:
Unii morti,
Altii plugari
Dintr-atatia frati mai mici:
Prunci de treaba,
Scunzi, peltici,
Numai eu rasad mai rău
Mai nauc, mai natarau,
Dintr-atatia (prin ce har?)
Mă brodisem sui, hoinar.

Eram mult mai prost pe-atunci…

Când Paresim da prin lunci
Cu pietrisul de albine,
Ne parea la toti mai bine:
Tanci ursuzi,
Desculti si uzi
Fetiscane
(Cozi plavane)
Infasate-n lungi zavelci
O porneau în turma bleaga
Să culeaga
Ierburi noi, craite, melci…

Era umed la bordei
Si tuleam si eu cu ei.

I

Tot asa o data, iar,
La un sfant prin Faurar
Ori la sfintii Mucenici
Tarla noastra de pitici
Odihnea pe creasta, sus,
– Eu voinic prea tare nu-s.
Rupt din fuga
Subt o gluga
De-alunis, pe-o buturuga
Odihnii
Si eu curand…

Vezi, atunci mi-a dat prin gând
Ca tot stand si alegand
Jos pe vraful de foi ude
Prin lastari si vrejuri crude,
S-ar putea să dau de el,
Melcul prost, incetinel…
In ungher adânc, un gând
Imi soptea ca melcul bland
Din mormant de foi, pe-aproape
Cheama Omul să-l dezgroape…

Si pornii la scotocit
(Cu noroc, căci l-am gasit)
Era tot o mogaldeata
Ochi de bou, dar cu albeata:
Intre el si ce-i afar’
Strejuia un zid de var.
-Ce să fac cu el asa?
Să-l arunc nu îmi venea…
Vream să vad cum se dezghioaca
Pui molatic, din ghioaca:
Vream să vad cum iar invie
Somnoros, din colivie…

Si de-a lungul, pe pământ
M-asezai cu acest descant:
– “Melc, melc,
Cotobelc,
Ghem vargat
Si ferecat;
Lasa noaptea din gaoace,
Melc natang si fă-te-ncoace
Nu e bine să te-ascunzi
Sub paretii grei si scunzi
Printre vreacuri cerne soare,
Colti de iarba pe razoare
Au zvacnit iar muguri noi
Pun pe ramura altoi.
Melc, melc,
Cotobelc,
Iarna leapada cojoace
Si tu singur în gaoace!
Hai, iesi,
Din cornoasele camesi!
Scoate patru firisoare
Stravezii, tremuratoare,
Scoate umede si mici
Patru fire de arnici;
Si agata la festile
Ciufulite de zambile
Sau la fir de margarint
Inzauatul tau argint…

Peste gardurile vii
Dinspre vii,
Ori de vrei si mai la vale,
In tarlale
-Tipareste brau de bale…”

Dupa ce l-am descantat
L-am pus jos
Si-am asteptat…

Inserase mai de-a bine
Crengi uscate peste mine,
Bazaind la vantul stramb
Imi ziceau rastiti din dramb…

Nazdravana de padure
Jumulita de secure,
Scurt, furis
Inghitea din luminis.
Din lemnoase vagauni,
Capcauni
Ii vedeam piezisi cum casca
Buze searbade de iasca;

Si intorsi
Ochi bubosi
Innoptau sub frunti pestrite
De parose
Si barboase
Joimarite.

Si cum stau sub vant si frig
Strans carlig,
-Iscodind cu ochii treji
Mai de sus de brana, drumul
Unde seara tese fumul
Multor mreji;
De sub vreascuri vazui bine
Repezita inspre mine
O gusata cu gateji.

Chiondoras
Cata la cale:
De pe sale,
Când la deal si când la vale,
Curgeau betele taras.
Iar din plosca ei de gusa
De matusa
Un taios, un aspru: hârrsi..

Plans prelung cum scoate fiara,
Plans dogit,
Când un sarpe-i musca ghiara,
Muget aspru si largit
De vuia din funduri seara…
-Mi-a fost frica, si-am fugit!

II

Toata noaptea viscoli…
In sat inca n-ajunsesem
Ca porni duium, să vie
O vifornita tarzie
De Paresemi.
Vântura, stârnind gâlceava
Alba pleava;
Si cadeau si maruntei
Bobi de mei…
(Ningea bine, cu temei).
In bordei
Foc vârtos mânca napraznic
Retevei.

Pe coliba singur paznic
M-au lasat c-un vraf de pene…
Rar, le culegeam alene:
Mosul Iene
Razbatea de prin poiene
Să-mi dea genele prin gene.
Si trudit,
Langa vatra prigonit
Privegheam prelung tăciunii…
Umbre dese,
Ca paunii,
Imi roteau pe hornul sui
Leasa ochilor verzui.

Si-mi ziceam în gând:
“Dar el,
Melcul, prost, incetinel?
Tremura-n ghioaca, varga,
Nu cumva un vant să-l sparga:
Roagă vantul să nu-l fure
Si să nu mai biciuiasca
Barbi de muschi, obraji de iasca,
Prin padure.
Roaga vantul să se-ndure”

De la jarul straveziu,
Mai tarziu,
Somnoros venii la geam.
(Era ‘nalt, nu ajungeam.)
Dar prin sticla petecita,
Si prin ghiata încâlcita,
Fulgera cand des, cand rar,
Prapadenia de-afar’:
Podul lumii se surpase
Iar pe case,
Pana sus, peste colnic,
Albicioase
Ori foioase
Cadeau cepi de arbagic.

Mi-adusei atunci aminte.
C-auzisem mai ‘nainte,
De o noapte intre toate
Urgisita,
Când, pe coate,
Guri spurcate
Suflă vant
Să dărâme
Din pământ…
Când, pe-un sloi, rupând din pita,
Baba Dochia-învălită
Cu opt sarici
Sta covrig,
Sta, înghite
Si sughite
Si se vaicara
De frig.
– Hei, e noaptea-aceea poate!

Inapoi
La fulgii moi
Cumpenind a somn, pe coate,
Cu tot gandul, sus, la-el,
Soptii:
“Melc incetinel,
Cum n-ai vrut să iesi mai iute!
Nici vifornită, nici mute
Prin paduri nu te-ar fi prins…
Iar acum, când focu-i stins,
Hornul nins,
Am fi doi s-alegem pene
Si alene
Să chemam pe mosul Iene
Din poiene,
Să ne-nchida:
Mie, gene;
Tie,
Cornul drept,
Cel stâng,
Binisor,
Pe când se frâng
Lemne-n crâng,
Melc natâng,
Melc natâng!”

III

Dintre pene si cotoare
Gata nins,
Cum mija un pic de soare
Pe întins
(In câmpie
Colilie
Razboind cu lunecusul
Şi pieziş la povârniş
Din ţăpoi săltând urcuşul,)
Mă-ntorsei sub aluniş
Şi-l zării lângă culcuşu-i
De frunziş
Era, tot, o scorojita
Limba vanata, sucita,
O nuia, ea un hengher
Il tinea în zgarzi de ger!
Zale reci,
Aspre benti ce se-întretaie,
Sus, pe vreascurile seci,
Il prindeau:
O frunza moarta, cu pastaie.
Si pe trupul lui zgarcit
M-am plecat
Si l-am bocit:

– “Melc, melc, ce-ai făcut
Din somn cum te-ai desfacut?
Ai crezut în vorba mea
Prefacuta… Ea glumea!
Ai crezut ca ploua soare,
C-a dat iarba pe razoare,
Ca alunul e un cantec…
– Astea-s vorbe si descantec!

Trebuia să dormi ca ieri,
Surd la cânt si imbieri,
Să tragi alt oblon de var
intre trup si ce-i afar’…
– Vezi?
Iesisi la un descantec;
Iarna ti-a muscat din pântec…
Ai pornit spre lunci si crâng,
Dar pornisi cu cornul stâng,
Melc natâng,
Melc natâng!”

Iar când vrui să-l mai alint
Intinsei o mâna-amara
De plans mult….
si, dârdâind,
Doua coarne de argint
Rasucit, se fărâmară.
Ca e ciunt, nu m-am uitat…
Ci, în punga lui cu bale,
Cu-insutite griji, pe cale
L-am purtat
Leganat:

Punga mica de matasa…
Iar acasa
L-am pus bine
Sus, în pod
(Tot langa mine),
Ca să-i cânt din când în când
Fie tare
Fie-n gând:
“Melc, melc,
Cotobelc,
Ploua soare
Prin fâneturi si razoare,
Lujerii te-asteapta-în crâng

Dar n-ai corn
Nici drept,
Nici stâng;
Sunt în sân la mosul Iene
Din poiene:
Cornul drept,
Cornul stâng…

– Iarna coarnele se frâng,
Melc natâng,
Melc natâng!”

Looking for snails

Of so many elder brothers:
Some dead,
Ploughmen being the others
Of so many younger brothers:
Good kids,
Short, lisping the others,
Only me, bad egg, you see,
Silly, goofy, that was me,
Of so many (by what grace?)
I turned out an oddball, scarce.

I was way much foolish then …

When Lent over grove began
On the gravel with bee buzz
We were happier, all of us:
Sulky brats set
Barefoot, wet
Charming girls
(Blond hair tails)
Wrapped in long skirts with details
In a foolish flock they were
Looking for
Fresh herbs, marigolds, and snails …
The hut was a damp mayhem
So, I’d hit the road with them.

I

Once again, the same way,
on a February’s Day
Or the holy Martyrs time
Our whipsters’ herd with grime
Was resting up on the ridge
– I’m not tougher than a snitch.
Run I could
Under a hood
Of hurst, sitting on a wood
Soon I’ve rested
easily

Then it crossed my mind, you see
As I stood there on my knee
Down the pile of wet leaves tween
Through the twigs and haulms too green
I might find him, small and frail
The naive, slow-moving snail …
From deep corner, a thought pale
Whispered me that gentle snail
From a pile of leaves, close by
Calls the Man to dig him high …

And rummaging through I started
(With good luck because I found it)
It was all a thing abstract
Ox eye with a cataract.
Between him and outside
Was guarding a wall to hide.
-What to do with him like that?
To throw it, I had no heart …
I wanted to see him hatch
Soft chick, from eggshells detach:
I wanted to see reviving
Sleepy, from the cage of hiding …

And along the ground in panting
I sat down, with quiet chanting:
– “Snail, snail,
Dearest frail,
Striped ball
Confined all.
Leave the darkness of the shell,
Snail naive and get rebel
It’s not good to hide your soul
Beneath the heavy, straight wall
Through the brushwood sifts the sun
Blades of grass grew more than one
Throbbing green and newborn buds
On each branch they put their grafts

Snail, snail,
Dearest frail,
Winter sheds its coats with spell
And you hide alone in shell!
Come on, out,
From your many shirts of doubt!
Bring out four gentle threads
Pellucid, quivering heads
Bring out wet, and small, alive
Four twisted threads to revive.
And cling to the rushlight scents
Disheveled of hyacinths
Or to lily of the valley
Your silver sheathing challis …

Over hedges vagary
From grapery,
Or much further down the valley,
On fields dally
-Print your slobber belt of doily… “

Slowly, after I enchanted
I put it down
And I waited …

It was really getting dark
Dry branches over me lurk,
Crackling in the crooked wind
Yelled at me with harsh entwined…

The bewitched forest chucked
By the hatchet stripped and plucked
Stealthily, fast
Swallowed the clearing amassed.
From the hollows of the trees,
Ogres seize
I’d see open large, askew
Dried lips of a spongeous shrew.
Twisted lies
Bubbling eyes
Hidden under huge foreheads
Of some hairy
Bearded scary
Witchy dreads.

As I stood in the cold nook,
Tight as hook,
Peering with eyes widely scanning
The road, from above the trail
Where the evening weaves the veil
of lots cunning,
Under brushwood I saw well
Jumping at me from the hell
A goiter with throats all strumming.

Squinting
poked prying the way:
now the hill and now the valley,
Ugly rags were flowing crawling,
From her huge goiter askant
Of an aunt
It came a sound deeply blunt…

Roaring howl as from a beast
Hideaway,
When a snake bites its claw, pierced
Rough, wide bellow from astray
That the night rumbled its twist …
– I was scared and ran away!

II

All night blizzards had their say …
Hadn’t reached the village yet,
When deluge was storming raw
Late and heavy fall of snow
Easter lent.
Wind quarreling with the snow,
White chaff though
Falling little snowflakes streams
Jolly beans …
(Snowing rightly so, it seems)
The hut dreams
Hungry fire wildly eating
Woody sticks.

In the whole hut lonely guarding
Been left with a feathers’ pile,
Picking them up for a while …
Sandman’s smile
Kept coming from clearings’ mile
To close my eyelids with guile.
Tired face
By fireplace,
Lingeringly over embers looking …
Thick shadows like peacocks peeking
Spinning on my chimney highs
Trellis of the greenish eyes.

Talking to myself:
“But he,
Silly, slow snail, who can’t see?
Shivers in his shell, alone
Any wind could break his bone,
Beg the wind to steal him not
And stop whipping over peaks
Muscle beards, spongious cheeks
Forest lot.
Beg the wind for mercy aught.”

From the embers’ light upon
Later on
I came to the window spot
(It was tall, I’d reach it not.)
Yet through all the patched glass,
And through all the tangled ice,
Flashed often or rare with glide
The havoc of outside
The world’s attic broke in ravage
And on cottage,
Everywhere up to the hill,
Whitish seals
many peels
Little onions falling still.
I remembered then, abhor,
Something that I’ve heard before,
Of a night like no one other
Cursed, when wicked creatures smother,
Filthy mouths blow wind around
To tear down all from the ground …
Breaking pita, on icefloe
The Old Dokia – wrapped in snow
With eight coats
sits curled up,
When she swallows
hiccup follows
And she grumbles
in cold’s trap.
– Hey, that night could be, who knows!

No breaks,
Back to the soft flakes
Sleepy, standing on my elbows,
Thinking of him, no avail
Whispering:
“Snail, slowly snail,
Why you didn’t go out faster!
No storm, no other disaster
Wouldn’t catch you in the wood…
And now, when fire is mute,
Chimney snowed
We’d be both feathers to choose
And at ease
We’d call Sandman from the trees
To close:
To me
Eyes;
To you,
Right horn,
then the left,
Easy,
While they break with cleft
Wood bereft,
Snail not deft
Snail not deft!

III

From the fluffy feathers flowed,
Really snowed,
How a little sun was shining
On wide road
(On the field
way revealed
Strongly with the slipper fighting
And elope to the slope
With pitchfork pushing the climbing,)
I returned to coppice, hope
And I saw him, his declining
Foliage top
He was just a shriveled thing
Bruised and twisted tongue in ring
Ice frozen wand, with a spite
Held him in collar frostbite!
Frozen slime,
Harsh ribbons that intertwine
Up on the dry brushwood grime
They caught him:
A dead leaf with soul so fine.
On his body dead and slim
I bowed
And I mourned for him:

“Snail, snail, in my keep,
Why you’ve got out of your sleep?
You believed my word pretending
Fake word, snail…I was just kidding!
You thought it was raining light
and the fields with grass delight,
That the coppice all is well…
These are only words and spell!

Should have slept like yesterday,
Deaf to the song, lure astray
Put another shutter shell
Between you and what’s out there …
– See?
You came out to a spelly;
Winter has bitten your belly …
You set off for meadows trail,
But the left horn’s starting fail
Naive Snail,
Naive Snail!”

When I wanted to caress him,
I held out my bitter palm
Of much crying …
And shivering,
Two horns with a silver beam
Twisted, they shattered in spasm.

That was crippled, I didn’t care,
And in his slobber display,
Worried deeply, on the way
I carried it
Rocking fit:
A small silky bag as dome
And at home
I put him well
In the attic
(Both to dwell),
Sometimes to sing him so kind
Either loud or in my mind:
“Snail, snail
Dearest frail,
It’s raining sun
Through the hayfields and groves’ run,
Flowers call you to the heft,
But no horn
Not right,
Not left.
They’re at Sandman’s bosom sough,
From the meadow:
The right horn,
The left horn …

Winter leaves you for the mourn,
Snail torn
Snail torn! “

2. Riga crypto si lapona enigel

Menestrel trist, mai aburit
Ca vinul vechi ciocnit la nuntă,
De cuscrul mare dăruit
Cu pungi, panglici, beteli cu funtă,

Mult îndărătnic menestrel,
Un cântec larg tot mai încearcă,
Zi-mi de lapona Enigel
Şi Crypto, regele-ciupearcă!

– Nuntaş fruntaş!
Ospăţul tău limba mi-a fript-o,
Dar, cântecul, tot zice-l-aş,
Cu Enigel şi riga Crypto.

– Zi-l menestrel!
Cu foc l-ai zis acum o vară;
Azi zi-mi-l strâns, încetinel,
La spartul nunţii, în cămară.

Des cercetat de pădureţi
În pat de râu şi-n humă unsă,
Împărăţea peste bureţi
Crai Crypto, inimă ascunsă,

La vecinic tron, de rouă parcă!
Dar printre ei bârfeau bureţii
De-o vrăjitoare mânătarcă,
De la fântâna tinereţii.

Şi răi ghioci şi toporaşi
Din gropi ieşeau să-l ocărască,
Sterp îl făceau şi nărăvaş,
Că nu voia să înflorească.

În ţări de gheaţă urgisită,
Pe-acelaşi timp trăia cu el,
Laponă mică, liniştită,
Cu piei, pre nume Enigel.

De la iernat, la păşunat,
În noul an, să-şi ducă renii,
Prin aer ud, tot mai la sud,
Ea poposi pe muşchiul crud
La Crypto, mirele poienii.

Pe trei covoare de răcoare
Lin adormi, torcând verdeaţă:
Când lângă sân, un rigă spân,
Cu eunucul lui bătrân,
Veni s-o-mbie, cu dulceaţă:

– Enigel, Enigel,
Ţi-am adus dulceaţă, iacă.
Uite fragi, ţie dragi,
Ia-i şi toarnă-i în puiacă.

– Rigă spân, de la sân,
Mulţumesc Dumitale.
Eu mă duc să culeg
Fragii fragezi, mai la vale.

-Enigel, Enigel,
Scade noaptea, ies lumine,
Dacă pleci să culegi,
Începi, rogu-te, cu mine.

-Te-aş culege, rigă blând…
Zorile încep să joace
Şi eşti umed şi plăpând:
Teamă mi-e, te frângi curând,
Lasă. – Aşteaptă de te coace.

-Să mă coc, Enigel,
Mult aş vrea, dar vezi, de soare,
Visuri sute, de măcel,
Mă despart. E roşu, mare,
Pete are fel de fel;
Lasă-l, uită-l, Enigel,
În somn fraged şi răcoare.

– Rigă Crypto, rigă Crypto,
Ca o lamă de blestem
Vorba-n inimă-ai înfipt-o!
Eu de umbră mult mă tem,

Că dacă-n iarnă sunt făcută,
Şi ursul alb mi-e vărul drept,
Din umbra deasă, desfăcută,
Mă-nchin la soarele-nţelept.

La lămpi de gheaţă, supt zăpezi,
Tot polul meu un vis visează.
Greu taler scump cu margini verzi
De aur, visu-i cercetează.

Mă-nchin la soarele-nţelept,
Că sufletu-i fântână-n piept,
Şi roata albă mi-e stăpână,
Ce zace-n sufletul-fântână.

La soare, roata se măreşte;
La umbră, numai carnea creşte
Şi somn e carnea, se dezumflă,
Dar vânt şi umbră iar o umflă…

Frumos vorbi şi subţirel
Lapona dreaptă, Enigel,
Dar timpul, vezi, nu adăsta,
Iar soarele acuma sta
Svârlit în sus, ca un inel.

– Plângi, preacuminte Enigel!
Lui Crypto, regele-ciupearcă.
Lumina iute cum să-i placă?
El se desface uşurel
De Enigel,
De partea umbrei moi, să treacă…

Dar soarele, aprins inel,
Se oglindi adânc în el;
De zece ori, fără sfială,
Se oglindi în pielea-i cheală.

Şi sucul dulce înăcreşte!
Ascunsa-i inimă plesneşte,
Spre zece vii peceţi de semn,
Venin şi roşu untdelemn
Mustesc din funduri de blestem;

Că-i greu mult soare să îndure
Ciupearcă crudă de pădure,
Că sufletul nu e fântână
Decât la om, fiară bătrână,
Iar la făptură mai firavă
Pahar e gândul, cu otravă,

Ca la nebunul rigă Crypto,
Ce focul inima i-a fript-o,
De a rămas să rătăcească
Cu altă faţă, mai crăiască:

Cu Laurul-Balaurul,
Să toarne-n lume aurul,
Să-l toace, gol la drum să iasă,
Cu măsălariţa-mireasă,
Să-i ţie de împărăteasă.

King crypto and Laplander Enigel

Sad minstrel, much steamier
Than good old wine served at the wedding
By the groom’s father given there
With bags and ribbons, tinsel weaving,

Of all most stubborn minstrel
A grand old song still tries to sing,
Sing of Laplander Enigel,
And Crypto, the mushroom-king!

You, guest with quest!
Your feast, my tongue did burn and sting,
I’ll sing that song, with candid zest,
Of Enigel and Crypto king.

Sing it minstrel!
You sang it fierly yester-summer.
Now sing it to me slowly, well,
At wedding’s end, you, cellar charmer.

*

Oft searched by forests’ creatures wild
In riverbed, anointed clay,
Ruled over mushrooms’ fleshy mild
King Crypto, hidden heart, astray

On some eternal dewy throne!
But mushrooms gossiped, anyway
About a witch called Penny Bun
From the youth fountain, who could say.

And hateful snowdrops, violet
From dampy pits were cursing sour,
Calling him fruitless, balky yet
Because he didn’t want to flower.

In lands forever doomed by ice,
At the same time living as well,
A small Laplander, quiet and wise,
With furs, named sweetly Enigel.

From winter snow ’til grazing glow
In the new year her reindeers bring,
Through the wet time, further south clime
On the raw moss she found confine’
Near Crypto, meadow’s groom and king.

On three rugs’ grace of freshness
Gently she slept, spinning the grass
When near chest string, a glabrous king,
With his old eunuch and his ring,
Came luring her with jam in glass:

– Enigel, Enigel,
Look, I brought you jam that’s sweet.
Berries too, dear to you
Take them all, enjoy and eat.

– Glabrous king smart, from my heart
Thank you for your gracious will
But I go to to pick up
Fresh berries from down the hill.

– Enigel, Enigel,
Night decreases, light comes through,
If you go to pick up,
Start with me, I beg of you.

– Gentle king, I’d pick you, pray…
But the dawn begins to burst
And you’re damp and feeble clay:
I fear that soon you’ll decay,
Leave me. – Wait you ripen first.

– I to ripen, Enigel,
How I’d wish, but from the sun,
Hundreds of nightmares, repel
Cut me off. He’s red, the one,
Lots of spots make him unwell.
Please forget him Enigel,
Tender sleep, in freshness done.

– Crypto king, Crypto king,
Like a blade of curse severe
In my heart you stuck your saying
For the shadow I do fear,

For if in winter I was born,
And cousin to the polar bear
From the thick shadow I’ve been drawn
To the wise sun, I bow in prayer.

Under ice lamps, under snow’s pledge
My whole pole dreams only one dream.
Large golden platter with green edge
The dream is haunting with a gleam.

I bow to the wise sun as whole
For fountain is the heart and soul,
And the white wheel my master is,
In the soul-fountain lies and lives.

In sunlight, the wheel larger glows.
In shadow, only the flesh grows.
And flesh means sleep, it will decline,
Just wind and shadow make it fine …

Wisely spoke, shyly and well
Little Laplander, Enigel,
But time, you see, was waiting not,
And the sun stood now, large and hot,
Up in the sky, a ring of spell.
– Weep, you, kindhearted Enigel!
How Crypto could, the mushroom king,
Love the hot light, which death may bring?
He unwinds easily, unwell,
From Enigel,
To the soft shadow side to swing…

But the sun, hot fiery ring,
Mirrored deeply inside the king.
Ten times, without shame or chagrin
Reflected on his bald pale skin.

And all that’s sweet, sour becomes!
His hidden heart bursts into crumbs,
Ten lively signs of seals conceal
Venom, red oil to ordeal
Brew from the depths of curse’s seal.

For the frail mushroom from the wood,
It’s hard to bear the sunlight shrewd,
For the soul is a fountain feast,
Only for human, ancient beast,
And for a creature way too frail
The thought is glass of poisonous spell,

– Like for the foolish Crypto Sire
Whose heart was burned by the love’s fire,
Left now to wander aimlessly
With other beings, more royally:

With Dragon old, creature called,
To pour gold into the world,
To chop it, naked on the road,
With Penny Bun wedding to mold,
His queen forever to behold.

From time, deducted

From time, deducted the depth of this calm crest,
Entered through the mirror into redeemed azure,
Engraving on the drowning of the rustic herds’ quest,
Inside the water’s matter, a mirrored game, much pure.

Latent nadir! The poet raises the summing plea
Of breathless harps lost in a reverse flight
And song exhausts: hidden, like only the sea
Swaying its Medusas under the green bells of light.

4. Umanizare

Castelul tau de ghiata l-am cunoscut gindire:
Sub tristele-i arcade mult timp am ratacit
De noi rasfringeri dornic, dar nicio oglindire,
In stinsele cristale ce-ascunzi, nu mi-a vorbit.

Sub acel pilc de arbori salbateci, in amurg,
mi-ai aparut – sub chipuri necunoscute mie,
Cum nu erai acolo, in frigurosul burg,
Tu, muzica a formei in zbor, Euritmie!

Sub infloritii arbori, sub ochiul meu uimit,
Te-ai resorbit in sunet, in linie, culoare,
Te-ai revarsat in lucruri, cum in eternul mit
Se revarsa divinul in luturi pieritoare.

Sa simta ca vibraza in lumi nenumarate…

Si-n acel fapt de seara, uitindu-ma spre Nord,
In ceasul cind penumbra la orizont descreste

Humanization

I was meant to know your ice castle, Mind:
Under its saddened arcades I wandered a long time
Eager for new reflections, yet not one mirrored find,
Hidden in faded crystals, to me won’t even chime.

I left behind me your polar splendor glow
I walked and walked towards the warmer southern land,
When, at dusk, near a cluster of bushy trees, below
My path, caught by the shadow, stopped to understand.

There, below that cluster of wild trees, in dusk’s light,
you showed up – many faces, ’till then unknown to me
The way I’ve never seen you in that cold, icy site
You, music of all forms in flight, Eurythmy!

Under the trees with blossoms and my astonished eye,
You drank yourself in sound, in line, in colored way
You poured yourself into things, like the eternal why
The divine poured himself into perishable clay.

Oh, how my entire soul would have wanted it to hold
To widen with the circle of your prolonged wave
To break the heaven and – enlarged and thousandfold –
To feel that it vibrates in countless worlds brave…

And then, while looking North, that sleepy hour evening,
That hour when the shadow on the horizon dies
And the evening delays a drowsy understanding,
It seemed to me the ice dome was melting in the skies.

5. Timbru

Cimpoiul veşted luncii, sau fluierul în drum
Durerea divizată o sună-ncet, mai tare…
Dar piatra-n rugăciune, a humei despuiare
Şi unda logodită sub cer, vor spune – cum?

Ar trebui un cântec încăpător, precum
Foşnirea mătăsoasă a mărilor cu sare;

Sound

The meadow’s scorched bagpipe, the whistle of the road, now
Sound the divided pain in slow and louder way …
Yet the stone in prayer, the stripping of the clay,
The wave betrothed under the sky; they will say – how?

Should be a spacious song, large enough to relive
The silky rustle of the salty seas morphosis
Or the praise of the garden of angels when it rises
From the rib of the man the smoky frame of Eve.

6. Oul dogmatic

Dogma: Şi duhul Sfânt se
purta deasupra apelor

E dat acestui trist norod
Si oul sterp ca de mâncare,
Dar viul ou, la vârf cu plod,
Făcut e să-l privim la soare!

Cum lumea veche, în clestar,
Înoată, în subtire var,
Nevinovatul, noul ou,
Palat de nuntă si cavou.

Din trei atlazuri e culcusul
În care doarme nins albusul
Atât de gales, de închis,
Cu trupul drag surpat în vis.

Dar plodul?
De foarte sus
Din polul plus
De unde glodul
Pământurilor n-a ajuns
Acordă lin
Si masculin
Albusului în hialin :
Sărutul plin.

Om uitător, ireversibil,
Vezi Duhul Sfânt făcut sensibil?
Precum atunci, si azi — întocma :
Mărunte lumi păstrează dogma.

Să vezi la bolti pe Sfântul Duh
Veghind vii ape fără stuh,
Acest ou — simbol ti-l aduc,
Om sters, uituc.

Nu oul rosu.
Om fără sat si om nerod,
Un ou cu plod
Îti vreau plocon, acum de Paste:
Îl urcă — în soare si cunoaste!

Si mai ales te înfioară
De acel galben icusar,
Ceasornic fără minutar
Ce singur scrie când să moară
Si ou si lume. Te-înfioară
De ceasul, galben necesar…
A mortii frunte — acolo-i toată.
În gălbenus,
Să roadă spornicul albus,
Durata-înscrie-în noi o roată.
Întocma — dogma.

Încă o dată:
E Oul celui sterp la fel,
Dar nu-l sorbi. Curmi nuntă-în el.
Si nici la closcă să nu-l pui!
Îl lasă — în pacea — întâie-a lui,

Că vinovat e tot făcutul,
Si sfânt, doar nunta, începutul.

The Dogmatic Egg

Dogma: And the Spirit of God
was hovering over the face of the waters

It’s given to these humble folk
The barren egg for daily meal,
The egg with life, topped with the yolk,
Was meant in light his seal reveal!

As the old world, in crystal prime,
Swims, in the thin intended lime
The innocent, new egg-encrypt
A wedding palace and a crypt.

Of satin three the shelter is
In which the egg snow whitely sleeps
So passive, so enclosed in beam
With a dear body lost in dream.

But what of seed?
From very tall
From the plus pole
Where mud of need
Has never touched the very soul
He offers keen
And masculine
To the whites in hyaline
A kiss pristine.

Careless man, beyond the render
Do you see Holy Spirit tender?
Today as long ago – the same
Small worlds keep dogma as a frame.

To see The Spirit in vault creeds
Watching live waters without reeds,
This egg – symbol to you I bring,
Dull, careless being.

Not the red egg.
Man without village, barren speck,
An egg alive
I want it pledge, for Easter thrive:
Put it – in sunlight, look and strive!

And most of all shudder you must
Seeing that yellow coin withstands,
Old clock without a minute hand
Which alone writes when to die just
Egg and world both. Shudder fast
At the clock, yellow needed stand.
death’s forehead – it is all there.
Inside the yolk,
To bear the potent egg white soak,
Time – inscribes – a wheel in us, fair.
A karma – dogma.

And one more time:
The egg with life ‘s one with the dead,
Don’t sip it. Kill inside the wedd.
Don’t give it to the broody either
Leave – him alone – be a believer.
For guilty ‘s all that one is doing
But holy, just the wedd, beginning.

TUDOR ARGHEZI

1. Ex libris

Carte frumoasă cinste cui te-a scris
Incet gandita, gingas cumpănită;

Honor to whom wrote you, beautiful book
Thoroughly and delicately thought.
You’re like a flower, which to blossom sought,
for my hands which to read you undertook.

You’re like the violin, the only one
That plays the whole love on a string
And your pages, truth, the real thing,
With the holy letter have been done.

A man of blood from the peak takes the clay
And he begets his great phantasm torment
Of dreaming and of shadow and of scent
And he descends it alive in our way.

But his oblation seems in vain to be
as beautiful is the book’s verse and spell
Beloved book, useless, to no avail
You do not answer any questions-plea.

2. De-a v-ati ascuns…

Mana stangace, ochiul sleit, limba scamoasa.

Jocul incepe incet, ca un vant,
Eu o sa rad si o sa tac,
O sa ma culc la pamant.
O sa stau fara cuvant,
De pilda, langa copac.

E jocul sfintelor Scripturi.
Asa s-a jucat si Domnul nostru Isus Hristos

In lutul afanat sau tare.
Asa e jocul, incepe cu moarte.

Stiind ca si Lazar a-nviat
Voi sa nu va mahniti, s-asteptati,
Ca si cum nu s-a intamplat
Nimic prea nou si prea ciudat.
Acolo, voi gandi la jocul nostru, printre frati.

Tata s-a ingrijit de voi,
V-a lasat vite, hambare,
Pasune, bordeie si oi,
Pentru tot soiul de nevoi
Si pentru mancare.

Toti vor invia, toti se vor intoarce
Intr-o zi acasa, la copii,
La nevasta, care plange si toarce,
La vacute, la mioare,
Ca oamenii gospodari si vii.

Voi cresteti, dragii mei, sanatosi,
Voinici, zglobii, cu voie buna,
Cum am apucat din mosi-stramosi.
Deocamdata, fetii mei frumosi,
O sa lipseasca tata vreo luna.

Apoi, o sa fie o intarziere,
Si alta, si pe urma alta.
Tata nu o sa mai aiba putere
Sa vie pe jos, in timpul cat se cere,
Din lumea ceealalta.

Si, voi ati crescut mari,
V-ati capatuit,
V-ati facut carturari,
Mama-mpleteste ciorapi si pieptari,
Si tata nu a mai venit…

Puii mei, bobocii mei, copiii mei!
Asa este jocul.
Il joci in doi, in trei,
Il joci in cate cati vrei.
Arde-l-ar focul.

Hide and seek

My dears, once I will play
With you, of something strange at sight.
Your Father doesn’t know when is that day
But, once definitely we’ll play,
Once, maybe, after the twilight.

It’s of elders’ a cunning game
With children, like you, with girls with frocks
Game of servants and of masters, the same,
Game of birds, of flowers, of dogs
Which everyone plays to aim.

We will always love each other, agreed
Happy around the table skimp,
Under God’s roof kneed.
One day the leg will be limp,
The hand uncertain, tired the eye, the tongue grimp.

The game starts slowly, like a wind,
I will laugh and silent I’ll be
On the ground I will lie with descend
I will stay saying no thing,
For example, near a tree.

It is of Holy Scriptures game discrete.
This is how our Lord Jesus Christ played
And others, caught in the cold and heat,
With a few of holy tremors beat
They finished the game, beautifully obeyed.

Do not grieve too much overall
When they will take me far away
And will make me a kind of funeral
In the loose or hard clay.
That’s the game, starts with death, of all.

Knowing that also Lazarus rose at call
You do not worry but wait,
As if nothing happened at all
Nothing too new and too big or small.
There, I’ll think of our game, with my fate.

Father knew in his care how to keep
He left you cattle, barns, all
Pastures, huts and sheep,
For all kind of needs in deep
And food, for the long haul.

Everyone will rise, everyone will return
Home, to the kids, one blessed day
To the wife, who cries, spins yarn
To the cows, to the sheep, to discern
Like all people thrifty, alive, gay.

You grow up healthy, my dear ones,
Strong, joyful, always with smile,
How it was meant by my elders once.
For now, my beloved sons
Father will be missing for a while.

Then there will be a delay,
Another one, and then another.
Father will no longer find the way
To walk back, as you would pray
From one world to the other.

And you grew up, went far
You did something with your life track
Some of you have become scholar,
Mother knits stockings and coat ajar
And Father did not come back…

My babies, my darlings, my plea!
This is the game.
You play it in two, in three,
You play it in as many could be.
May it burn in flame!

3. Testament

Nu-ţi voi lăsa drept bunuri, după moarte,
Decât un nume adunat pe o carte,
În seara răzvrătită care vine
De la străbunii mei până la tine,
Prin rapi şi gropi adânci
Suite de bătrânii mei pe brânci
Şi care, tânăr, să le urci te-aşteaptă
Cartea mea-i, fiule, o treaptă.

Aşeaz-o cu credinţa căpătâi.
Ea e hrişovul vostru cel dintâi.
Al robilor cu săricile, pline
De osemintele vărsate-n mine.

Ca să schimbăm, acum, intâia oară
Sapa-n condei şi brazda-n calimară
Bătrânii au adunat, printre plavani,
Sudoarea muncii sutelor de ani.
Din graiul lor cu-ndemnuri pentru vite
Eu am ivit cuvinte potrivite
Şi leagane urmaşilor stăpâni.
Şi, frământate mii de săptămâni
Le-am prefecut în versuri şi-n icoane,
Făcui din zdrenţe muguri şi coroane.
Veninul strâns l-am preschimbat în miere,
Lăsând întreaga dulcea lui putere
Am luat ocara, şi torcând uşure
Am pus-o când să-mbie, când să-njure.
Am luat cenuşa morţilor din vatră
Şi am făcut-o Dumnezeu de piatră,
Hotar înalt, cu două lumi pe poale,
Păzând în piscul datoriei tale.

Durerea noastra surdă şi amară
O grămădii pe-o singură vioară,
Pe care ascultând-o a jucat
Stăpânul, ca un ţap înjunghiat.
Din bube, mucegaiuri şi noroi
Iscat-am frumuseţi şi preţuri noi.
Biciul răbdat se-ntoarce în cuvinte
Si izbăveste-ncet pedesitor
Odrasla vie-a crimei tuturor.

Robul a scris-o, Domnul o citeşte,
Făr-a cunoaşte ca-n adîncul ei
Zace mania bunilor mei.

Testament

After my death upon you I’ll bestow
Only a name on a book, echo,
In the rebellious evening to pursue
From my ancestors up to you
Through creeks and deep ravines
Climbed by my elders on their knees
And which, young man, are there for you, to climb
My book is a ladder, my son.

Place it with faith as leading light.
That’s your first charter for the flight.
From the slaves with fur coats, filled
By the bones into my soul spilled.

That we could change now, in a blink,
The spud into a pen, the furrow into ink,
The elders gathered, with their oxen be,
The sweat of hundred years of drudgery.
From their tongue with urge for herds
I’ve put together fitting words
And cradles for the masters’ birthrights.
Kneaded for thousands of sennights,
I’ve turned them into icons, into verse
From rags I’ve made rosebuds and wreaths.
The gathered venom into honey I’ve turned
Keeping its sweet strength wholly unflawed,
I took the curse and with a twisting wear
I made him either lure or swear.
I took hearth ashes of dead bone
And I’ve turned them into a God of stone,
With two worlds at the edge, high boundary
Guarding over the summit of your duty.

Our dull and bitter pain
I’ve piled it on one violin
Whose sound made the master gloat
and dance like a stumbling goat.
From wounds, mildews, and muddiness
I’ve stirred new, priceless loveliness.
The endured whip is returning as words
Redeeming slowly, in punitive need
The offspring of everyone’s misdeed.
It is the obscure branch’s right
Out of the forest to the light,
Bearing on top, like warts anomalies
The fruit of pain of all eternities.

Lying on the divan with lazy look
The princess suffers in my book.
The word of fire and the word that’s forged
Together in my book are merged,
Like the hot iron in the tongs’ strong hold
Written by slave, read by the Lord,
Not knowing that inside its page
Is buried deep my ancestors’ rage.

4. Tare sunt singur, Doamne, si piezis!

Tare sunt singur, Doamne, și pieziș!
Copac pribeag uitat în câmpie,
Cu fruct amar și cu frunziș
Țepos și aspru-n îndârjire vie.

Tânjesc ca pasărea ciripitoare
Să se oprească-n drum,
Să cânte-n mine și să zboare
Prin umbra mea de fum.

Aștept crâmpeie mici de gingășie,
Cântece mici de vrăbii și lăstun
Să mi se dea și mie,
Ca pomilor de rod cu gustul bun.

Nu am nectare roze de dulceață,
Nici chiar aroma primei agurizi,

I am so lonely, Lord, and torn

I am so lonely, Lord, and torn!
A solitary tree forgotten in the plain,
With bitter fruit and foliage scorn
Thorny and harsh with zealous strain.

I long for a bird chirping loud
To stop on her way, for me
To sing in me and fly to cloud
Through my shadow of smoke to flee.

I wait for little bits of tenderness,
Small songs of sparrows, martin’s breathe
To be given to me no less
Like to the flavorous fruit-trees.

I have not nectar filled with sweetness pink
Not even flavour of the sour grapes,
And caught between ages and fog I sink
On my shell don’t sit caterpillars’ shapes.

High chandelier, guarding the Psalters
The stars come and light now and then
In the branches spread on the altars
I serve you, but, Lord, until when?

To have been flourished only in holy fires
To bear fruits only metals, penetrated
By heavy commandments and plyers,
Maybe, Lord, that’s enough for me intended.

You have forsaken me in my goal
And I toil from my roots and bleed.
Send me, Lord, the sign of distant soul,
From time to time, a little angel seed.

To flutter its wings white to the moon,
To give me still your best advice abloom.

5. De când mă ştii

De cînd ma stii, am luat asupra mea
Povara-ntodeauna, Doamne, cea mai grea.
Si tot urcînd în coasta, vream s-arat
Ca nu ma dau poverile-ndarat.

O suferinta între alte doua
N-am socotit-o suferinta noua.
Haide si tu, aseaza-te-n spinare.
Ma simt voinic. Pe cine ce-l mai doare?
Cine-i strein si singur, cine?
Sa urce-n cîrca, pe samar, la mine.

Hai, ticalosii, blînzii, toti de-a valma,
Cîti ati întors obrazul, cîti l-ati batut cu palma,
Însarcinare, poate, am de la Satan
Sa va ridic la cer prin uragan.
Sînt robul vostru, hotarît de sus,
Sa fiu caricatura lui Isus.

De cîti în seama mi v-a dat
Veniti.
Dator sînt sa va fac si fericiti.

Dar ostenit în drumul meu îngust,
Ca sînt ales la mila cu dezgust,
Scîrbit de om, jignit de omenire,
Sa-mi duc poverile la mîntuire,
As cauta zadarnic a-ntelege
De ce mi-ai pus porunci de-atare lege.

Eu, Doamne, le-am primit si ma supun,
Stapîne drag, gingas ca un lastun.
Vreau sa te-ntreb: cînd m-ai ales, ai fost nebun?

Since you know me

Since you know me, upon me I bestowed
Lord, always the heaviest load.
By climbing so, I wanted to prove that
No burden makes me to give up.

A suffering between two others
I didn’t see as a new bother.
Come also you, on my back stand.
I feel strong. Who else feels pain’s hand?
Who is a stranger and alone, who?
Climb on my back, my burden, too.

Come, all of you, the evil, the good grace
Those who turned the cheek, those who slapped his face.
Maybe I have a task from Satan wry
Through storm to lift you to the sky.
I am your servant, by heaven’s decree,
To be of Christ a parody.

For those given to my account
I want to answer honest throughout.
I won’t forget the one who gives bread, nor
The one who handcuffs, rules, whips. I deplore
You are all mine, both good and evil. Through.
I am obliged to make you happy too.

But tired in my narrow path with dust,
That I’m chosen at my mercy with disgust,
Disgusted by man, by mankind offended
To carry my burdens to a point intended,
I’d try in vain to understand
Why did you give me such command?

I, Lord, received them and obeyed I had
Dear master, gentle like a martin bird.
I want to ask you: when you chose me, were you mad?

Tu gemi că eşti puternic, el geme că-i sărac,
Pe amîndoi jurat sînt să vă-mpac.
Un vinovat îndură, alt vinovat înfrînge.
Tu dai otravă, semenul dă sînge.

Nefericiți și crînceni amîndoi.
Care-i mai teafăr dintre voi?

Even the sufferings are not the same

Even the sufferings are not the same.
One pushes, other bears it in selfsame.
One’s foot sole hurts, another’s neck is pain,
The strong are hurt by pride, the weakest by disdain.

You moan because you’re strong, because he’s poor he moans
I swear to reconcile you both.
One culprit suffers, one defeats the lad.
One give the poison, fellow man gives blood.

Bitter and grumpy both of you
Which one is sanest of you two?
When, from the top, the strong one to the weak I exchange
In the reverse balance nothing will ever change.

7. Mi-e dor de tine

Mi-e dor de tine, zvelta mea femeie,
De gura ta de orhidee,
De sânul tău cu bumbi de dude,
De buzele-ţi cărnoase, dulci şi ude,
Mi-e dor de tot ce se ascunde,
De şoldurile tale tari, rotunde,
De genunchii tăi mi-e dor,
Să-mi strânga capul înlăuntrul lor.
Dă-mi pe limbă să le bea
Balele tale calde, mult iubita mea,

Sufletul meu fără de tine-i orb,

Puiule mic,
Nufărul meu deschis
Plin de parfume rare şi de vis.
Vino, grădino,
Vino, senino.
Vino încet ca zborul tiptil de rîndunea
Iubita mea, femeia mea.

I miss you

I miss you so, my graceful woman,
Your orchid mouth, I summon,
Your bosom with mulberry tips,
Your voluptuous, sweet, wet lips,
I miss what’s hidden in your mix,
Your strong and curvy hips,
I strongly miss your knees,
To hold my head and squeeze,
Give to my tongue, to drink it all
your warm saliva, much beloved soul,
My woman, my pain and my whole.

Don’t you know, for better or worse,
My heart, mind, lips into you’ll immerse,
Like ivy wrapped around your reef
There is my soul with its light leaf.
Your stem goes high, up to star spots
Embraced by the frame of my thoughts.
Don’t you know, you are everything that’s true,
My light and my horizons blue,
The heaven and the water I drink
My soul is blind without you in a blink.
My hand is yearning, my mind is bent
Like the rye spike without rain spent.
My clay demands you, my heaven swing
Where I hear God whispering.
My garden with delicate berries
My fountain with raised water fairies
Gushing up in the sunlight
Bringing freshness delight.

Come, woman mine, to my caress
From head to toe, to bless
With lips and eyes in reverie.
I see you trembling like the sea,
From foam of laces in waves
Turquoise, emerald, topaz engraves.
Sneak under my vessel soft and quite
Guide it into deep and light.

I sing to you like an old child quest
Let me put you to sleep on my chest
Let yourself be gently rocked
With all your charms into my boat
And all the beauties silent tones
My jewel with unknown stones
Known to your servant who sings to you,
Come slowly and dress me true
With your soul, with your flesh too
Which to forget I can’t subdue.
You are my love,
My mistress,
My pain and my mirth.
You and I are one at birth.
Like one scion next to another, thus
And in the whole world we are the only ones,
Like two books bound into another heart,
Forever, day by day, ’till death us part.
So I shall know no one and anything,
My little thing,
My blossomed nenuphar
Filled with rare, dreamy scent from afar.
Come, my Eden,
Come, my serene,
Come slowly like a swallow’s flight
My love, my woman, my light.

8. Razbunare

Din vălul nopții rupi o stea:
O guști și-o scuipi când strălucea.
Cu mâna bălăcind în undă,
Strici luna rece și rotundă.
Din valuri îți croiești stihare,
Scăldându-te-n lumini de mare.
Culegi grădinile de flori,
Le-nmănunchezi și le omori.
Te-nfășuri între corzi de harpe
Și de viole mute, șarpe!
Și-n fiecarele din noi
Știi să strecori chei mici și moi.

Diavole, jocul tău ajunge!
Pan te-a trântit și-acum te-mpunge.

Vengeance

A star you break from night’s veil pit
You taste it, when it shone, you spit
With hand splashing the ripple, soon
You ruin the cold, rounded moon.
From waves you tailor your verse free,
Bathing into the lights of sea.
You reap gardens by flowers filled,
You cluster them and then they’re killed.
You wrap yourself between harps’ strings
And mute violins, snake of beings!
And inside each of our soul
You know how to slip soft keys, small.

Oh, Devil, your game now is damned!
Pan knocked you down and now you’re stabbed.

9 Binecuvîntare

Dormiţi, dormiţi!
Hipnoza nopţii suflă boare
În muşchii voştri veştejiţi
Şi mâine veţi avea izvoare
Din spor, pământul să-l stropiţi
Cu bale călătoare.

Dormiţi, dormiţi,
Căci legea o citeşte cariul
Când voi sunteţi încremeniţi
Şi-n ţeasta voastră-şi zvârlă zarul
Satan, cu ochii buimăciţi.
Noroc! Fiţi fericiţi!

Dormiţi, dormiţi,
În monarhia minerală,
Cu-obrajii, sterpi şi gălbejiţi,
Lipiţi de carnea triumfală,
Cu care, morţi, vă-nsufleţiţi
O zi şi-o viaţă goală.

Cei umiliţi în trudă şi-n răbdare,
Pribegii, robii şi sihaştrii,
Bătuţi de-a lunii vânătă dogoare,
Aşteaptă stolul şoimilor albaştri.
Judecători, stăpâni şi-ndreptăţiţi,
Voi sunteţi beţi. Dormiţi, dormiţi!

Şi însumi bine-vă-cuvânt.
Căci e nevoie pe pământ
Să vă-nmulţiţi,
Să ne-apăsaţi şi să ne-nlănţuiţi,
Şi veacuri oarbe să clădiţi,
Dormiţi, dormiţi!

Benediction

Sleep, sleep tight!
The trance of night a mild breeze whiff
Into your wilted muscles’ might
Tomorrow there will be headsprings
Plenty, to sprinkle the earth dried
With slobber tide.

Sleep, sleep, strays!
For the scripture is read by woodworms
while you are stone sheepfold
And the dice is rolled in your skulls
by Satan, with bewildered gaze hold,
Good luck and happy days!

Sleep, sleep in grace
In the mineral monarchy,
With barren colorless face,
Sealed to the triumphal flesh of thee
which enlivens your dead carcass
One day and one life aimless.

Those humbled in their toil, tenacity,
The wanderers, the slaves, the hermits,
Beaten by moon’s livid febrility
They wait for the blue hawks’ flights.
Judges, masters and the righteous deep,
You all are drunk. Sleep, sleep!

And I, myself, I bless your kind.
For it is needed on the land
To multiply,
To oppress and to chain our sky
And blind ages to edify
Sleep, sleep thereby!

10. Incertitudine

Îmi atârnă la fereastră
Iarba cerului, albastră,
Din care, pe mii de fire,
Curg luceferii-n neştire.

Sufletul, ca un burete,
Prinde lacrimile-ncete
Ale stelelor, pe rând,
Sticlind alb şi tremurând.

Scama tristeţelor mele
Se-ncurcă noaptea cu ele,
Genele lui Dumnezeu
Cad în călimarul meu.

Deschid cartea: cartea geme.
Caut vremea: nu e vreme.
Aş cânta: nu cânt şi sunt
Parc-aş fi şi nu mai sunt.

Gândul meu al cui gând este?
În ce gând, în ce poveste,
Îmi aduc aminte, poate,
Că făcui parte din toate?

Scriu aci, uituc, plecat,
Ascultând glasul ciudat
Al mlaştinii şi livezii.
Şi semnez: Tudor Arghezi.

Uncertainty

At my window to and fro
Sways the grass of heaven, blue,
On thousands of threads, ajar
Heedlessly flow evening stars.

While my soul like a sponge drinks
The blinking of the slow tears,
Of the stars that one by one
Shivering white they have shone.

Through my sorrows’ lint and hem
The night is tangled in them
The eyelashes of good God
Fall into my dark ink pot.

I open the book: it groans taut.
Look for time, the time is not.
I’d sing: I don’t sing but soar
As if I were and I’m no more.

My thought whose thought could it be?
In what thought and in what story,
I remember, maybe, I think
I was part of everything.

I write here, distraught, inclined,
Listening to the strange sound
Of the swamp and orchard tree
And I sign: Tudor Arghezi.

11. Ce plangi?

Ce plangi, copilul meu? Ce-ti are
Sufletul?

Pricina ei o simt ca-I pamanteasca,
Dintr-un nisip, dintr-un prundis, dintr-un namol.
De nu as da de urma ei in gol.

Cand a-nceput si lacrima de vita,
Ai plans sit u, suava mea domnita,
Si n-am avut sa banuiesc prilej
Ca s-a ranit o ramura de vrej.

Ma doare ca-I sosita vremea lor,
A gandului si-a lacrimilor,
Fara sa vad ca fragedul san mic
Creste tiptil in cuibul lui de borangic.

Obrazul sarutat de mine,
Acum primeste acrima, mai bine.
Vioaia ploapa, deodata trista,
Cata la drum sit ace in batista.

Papusile, povestile cum au trecut
De n-am stiut si nu am priceput?

Why cry?

Why cry, my child? Why ache in vain?
Your soul is it in pain?
As a dewdrop serene and clear,
It’d be like an adornment dear,
But it’s a tear of grief and sadness
And most of all it pains me its place.

To you no sign of tears I’ve ever gave,
For tears don’t ask nor answer ever have,
Afraid I was of your tear, my girl,
Yet unexpected it appeared, a pearl,

Where from it could have rose?
I feel that it is earthly its cause.
From sand, from pebble, from some mud.
Only not to find in vain its bud.

When the vine a first tear has cried,
You also cried, my gentle child,
I had no reason to suspect
That a twig from a stem may hurt.

It pains me that their time has arrived,
Of thought and tears wide
Without seeing how the small breast
It slowly grew in its silky nest.

The cheek by me so often kissed,
Welcomes now better the tears.
The lively eyelid, suddenly crushed,
Looks at the road, with a cloth being hushed.

The dolls, the stories, how they have passed
So I knew not nor did I forecast?

Fara-ndoiala, multumescu-ti bine,
Cladiri de piscuri, cuiburi de izvoare,
Timpuri si valuri calatoare
Si oamenii în sarbatoare;

Good and bad

Between the sad hope and the untrue,
I’ve looked for you through the sidereal blue.
I’ve looked for you there and nowhere
Suspecting that you would be hiding there.
I’ve looked for you in your mystic miss
Through Testaments and through Apocalypse.
Could it be left some unbeaten lot
Where for you I was searching not?
While sure that I’ve found you at last,
A wall surrounding you was cast.
While feeling you pulsating in the roots
I also felt you in the corn and in the sprouts.
I sang to you on strings, untouched or crushed,
And over lives, and over death dust.
But always you stayed away hushed.
Your hearing doesn’t want to sink in
The song of panpipes, lute, and violin?
At last, one blessed twilight hue
I thought I’d have a glimpse of you
In a dusk’s golden cloak anew.
Catching it, dragged across the land
A fringe’d been left into my hand
And in my bosom, like a wanderer, I’d hid
A stolen thing.
Allow me, unperceived fairy,
To ask you now an old query.
For all the gentle beauties that you do
Without a doubt, so very well I thank you,
Mountains’ peaks, springs’ nests to build
Traveling times and waves to shield
People at feasts on field.
Brave men, sweet girls with harp or the distaff to handle.
Moving their hand on strings, or the tow when it’s tangled.

But you, the greatest kindler of star beads
How come you also did so many bad deeds?

Broken path

Since life chose me to be a witness and a herald,
Enkindling a sparkle inside my self of smoke,
To get up from the heart of silence it enabled
And outlined my path through the ravines of rock.

I trusted it docile as in fatality,
Yet the blizzard and wind wiped cruelly my array,
And I felt lonelier, lost from humanity,
A universe iconostasis on the way.

Between earth and heaven, forgotten, tightly,
I no longer discerned neither path nor the quest
And with my fists and shoulders I defeated the tempest.

For seeking ease and to my unrested spirit repose,
Through constellations and fog, I’ve entered chaos.

14. Psalm VI

Pari când a fi, pari când ca nu mai eşti;
Te-ntrezării în stele, printre peşti,
Ca taurul sălbatec când se adapă.

Singuri, acum în marea ta poveste,
Rămân cu tine să mă mai măsor,
Fără să vreau să ies biruitor.
Vreau sa pipai si sa urlu “Este!”

Psalm VI

In noise and quiet, wisely, you I weigh
I lurk around, in time, as if you’re hunted,
To understand: are you my falcon wanted?
Should I kill you? Or should I kneel to pray.

For loyalty or for disavowal, thought
I’m looking for you boldly, in vain.
You are my most beautiful dream, to gain,
To knock you down from heaven I dare not.

Like the mirage of water on the road,
You seem sometimes to be and sometimes not
I glimpsed you in the stars, among the trout,
Like the wild bull thirsty to water bowed.

Alone now, you and I in our tryst,
To measure myself against you, it’s time
Without the will to conquer nor to chime
I want to touch you and to shout: “He does exist”!

15. Dormi?

Dormi, sufletul meu? te-ai culcat?
Ploua si singur mi s-a urît.
Vreau sa nu te supar.
Te-am vazut citind la lampa
Si n-am bagat de seama
Când ai închis oblonul din gradina,
Tarcat cu dungi egale de lumina.

Am batut încet în fereastra
Si iar am batut, mai tare,
Si am intrat în încaperea ta.
Curata rînduiala!
Cartea sta deschisa la pagina alba:
Toate paginile cartii erau albe.
Ce citeai tu într-o carte fara slove?

Patul era nedesfacut.
Cearsaful nou, perina proaspata.
Unde ai plecat?
Unde umbli noaptea singuratec?
Încaltamintea ti-este neatinsa.
Nu e gunoi la tine.
Te-mbraci în camasa de piatra
Si te încingi cu funie de-argint.
Tu n-ai nici sudoare,
Nici praf, nici scuipat.

Un ac îmi înglodeste inima strapunsa,
Medicule fara de prihana.
Sau e un cui de la Crucificat
Sau un ghimpe din cununa lui.
Vindeca-ma, suflete.
Vin-acasa, suflete.
Adu leacuri, suflete.

Do you sleep?

Do you sleep, my soul? did you go to sleep?
It’s raining and to be alone I hate.
I don’t want you to be upset.
I saw you reading at the lamp
And I didn’t observe
When did you close the garden blind?
Streaked with equal strips of light.

I knocked slowly at the window
And again, harder, I knocked,
And I came inside your room.
Clear tidiness!
The book stands open at the white page:
All the pages of the book were white.
What were you reading in a wordless book?

The bed was unopened.
The sheet new, the pillow fresh.
Where did you go?
Where do you wander lonely at night?
Your shoes are untouched.
There is no trash at you.
You dress the stone shirt
And you girdle with a silver rope.
You have not sweat,
Neither dust, nor spit.

A needle muddied my pierced heart,
Guileless doctor.
Or it’s a nail from the Crucified
Or a thorn from his crown.
Heal me, soul.
Come home, soul.
Bring cures, soul.

16. Oseminte pierdute

Iubirea noastră a murit aici.

Lost reliquiae

Our love has died right here, right here, right here.
You, leaf, you fall. You, branch, you rise as seer.

It’s been ages and ages ever since.
Wisteria, you, you throw your flowers wince.

Did she return to listen to your thoughts?
You, deep poplars, with voices, whispers lots?

You have remained turned towards west therefor.
You all grow up on high forevermore.

Don’t you see her anywhere, astray?
Do you know what means the word “yesterday”?

At gate the shadow of the same oak tree,
I beg the gardener when I come to see.

The fountain flows, as always, as then,
You, fountain, flow, upon my past, time and again.

And everything is as I knew them once
Remaining still, from the beginning thus.

I told him that I’m looking for a grave,
Which I dug long ago, with singing crave.

He answered that it isn’t in his care.
It was true. This grave is nobody’s and nowhere.

17. De-abia plecasesi

De-abia plecaseşi. Te-am rugat să pleci.
Te urmăream de-a lungul molatecii poteci,
Pân-ai pierit, la capăt, prin trifoi.
Nu te-ai uitat o dată înapoi!

Ţi-as fi făcut un semn, după plecare,
Dar ce-i un semn din umbră-n depărtare?

Voiam să pleci, voiam şi să rămâi.
Ai ascultat de gândul ce-l dintâi.
Nu te oprise gândul fără glas.
De ce-ai plecat? De ce-ai mai fi rămas?

You had just left

You had just left. I begged of you to leave.
I followed you along the path unweave,
Until you vanished, through the clover track
You never looked; not once did you look back!

I would have waved to you after you left,
But afar off what’s a shadow sign deft.

I wanted you to leave, also to stay.
My first thought you decided to obey.
The voiceless thought to stop you never did.
Why did you leave? And why would you have stayed?

18. Marile taceri

Ca am aprins in geam o luminare

Intr-o-nginare muta intre ele,
Mihnirilor si vietilor trecute,
Rabdate pe tacute.

De cite ori, traite, ai murit?
Mihnirile ascunse le-ncepi si n-au sfirsit.

The great silences

At the window of your soul
the remorses pile up all.
For a while you forget them, but they gather
And together whisper one another.

You wanted to forget all things at once,
yet trying you saw that you can’t stand a chance.
Is it a cure? Will bring it to you who?
The deaths themselves, they pile up in you.

And bitter is the tear,
One tear of dew, another of wax smear
For in the window, I lit a candle and
An icon lamp for all that was and pained.

They shivered like two stars,
Silently intertwining flares,
To sorrows, to the lives which passed
Enduring hushed.

How many times, life dweller, have you died?
You start the hidden sorrows and there’s no end to find.

MI-E MILĂ / I PITY

-Tudor Arghezi –

I pity

I have no pity enough to love the life of your creatures,
which you created to kill them.
I pity you, man.
I pity your feeble children.
I pity you being exhausted from toiling.
I pity the horses falling under the load.
I pity the stray dog.
I pity the birds that cry in winter in the frozen woods.
I pity the deer, doe and rabbits killed by the man
which I pity.
I pity the gentle beast, face to face with the killer ax.
I pity the oak shot down from its root.
I pity all flesh, all strength, all weakness.
I pity you, treacherous scoundrel – rascal with a dry heart
and a dirty brain.
I pity you too, arrogant and stupid.

Poem / Poem

Întotdeauna, acelaşi ceas bătea ora;

Poem

In the beginning was the word LOVE.
Your breath reached me
eerie, like a breath of wind, and the wind itself
lingered around us like a mysterious breath.
all I remember from that time
were the shady places we passed
and the high sky. The other things, if they come,
I find them by pure chance, as I find you;
forever the same clock was ticking…
Forever the same clock struck the hour:
as if all things in the world would have
a single death in one heart.
In vain I set aside the light mist :
the trees bend their branches above us
and we were left alone at night
in the middle of the overflowing water.
In the beginning was my shore, your shore,
and between us LOVE like a dead ocean.
For the first time, the sun, as it passed
from one
to another,
fell, golden bird killed, in waves.
Then, without our knowledge, predatory beings
descended from the shores, walked on the waters.
It lasted several thousand years. Then, eventually,
sea creatures came to bite on the shores.
now, our bitten lines look like
the profile of the continents and the souls,
like the fickle flower made of the foam of the sea,
shatter in the winds, lighten on the rocks.
At first there was only one word between us.
Now hundreds of dead words come to life,
when your breath reaches me,
eerie, like a breath of wind…
